Ok, so I have BCBS of Arizona. I was reading their their qualifications chart and it states that I must have a BMI of over 40 for at least 5 years. Well I have a BMI of 43 now- but 3 years ago I was only at like 38 or so. I do have one co-mordity that I was recently diagnosed with- Sleep Apnea. My dr recommended the surgery to help the sleep apnea. Will having the co-morbity diagnoses help me since I was not at 40 BMI for the last 5 years? I just can't stand the thought of having to wait 5 years for surgery because I didn't gain more weight until the last 2 years.  Thanks, Nicole

if it's not self funded you can appeal the denial to them, and then the state.  In AZ you usually dont need the full five years for non self funded plans

Gary, I have BC/BS of NJ. I called my college and graduate school's (same university) Health Center, they said my record was shredded a few months ago (10 yrs since last used them). In then least 10 yrs I have been obese, but not morbidly obese, because I was constantly dieting. Also in the last few yrs, had a significant weight loss due to a spinal cord injury, but have put all that weight back on. I am now back up to just over 35 BMI with HTN, apnea, and other comorbids. How do I prove the 5 yrs when I was over 40 BMI if the records were shredded? I don't have any other "weighins" and only 1 picture. Or am I SOL? Also, for the 5 yr history, do they consider a BMI of 35 with comorbids in the past the same as a BMI of 40 for "morbidly obese?" Thanks for all the work you do in helping us!!! Kahlua
