Hi, everyone so I called my insurance company today (Cigna) to ask if I was covered for WLS. The woman started naming off all these things that I had to send in, like list of medications, failed diet attempts, blood pressure and what not she didn’t even say that it had to be medical necessary or anything. Oh yeah and she also said I have to participate in 2 professional 26 week diets. And I’ve had to have had one in the last 12 months? I don’t understand this. I thought it was a 6 month diet… She also said I have to pay 20% which I’m ok with. But never heard of is this a new Cigna qualification?

Im sorry you were told that, now from what I hear each company can write what it will and wont cover and requirements when you use a self insured insurance... Im not sure of your policy though, did they give you an online policy to view online?  You may want to call and speak with another representative and see what they say.. Sometimes you can speak with them 2 0r 3 times and get 2 or 3 different answers... Im sorry, I hope I was able to help.. you have my email address if you have any other questions... Rahsheeda

Hi Kimberly,  I called Blue Cross the other day and asked the representative what they require to have a Lap Band procedure. The rep told me, " I don't know that off of the top of my head but is there anything else I can help you with?" I swear. Ridiculous. Rather than biting his head off, I hung up on him and called back to get someone that seemed semi open to answering my q's. I think I am going to have my ins co send me something in writing outlining what exactly I need to do to qualify and exactly what they will cover. They told me 80% also. What really stinks is they can change the plans as many times they want. Its up to us to stay strong and fight for the surgery! Good luck on your journey! Abby

26 weeks = 6 months. :) So this qualification is 2 medically supervised 6 month diet attempts, 1 of which is in the last 12 months. At least, that is how I read that.

What I know is that cigna does cover both gastic and lap!  My office takes them and if you look on the message board under insurance and go to C for cigna you can see all the people who have been approved orhaving trouble getting approved with Cigna.  For whatever its worth, I had to call my insurance company FOUR times before they would tell me they do cover WLS.  Even then, I lied to call their bluff and have them admit it.  However, they make it nearly impossible to get it so its not looking good for me right now :( Best wishes.
