Does anyone know (or did this) if this surgery is tax deductible. I am getting ready to have this surgery, and of course, I have to pay for it out of pocket. So, I was wondering if it was tax deductible.  I have lower back pain and rashes and I have been to the doc a few times because of it. I read the IRS info, and while it does not specifically state, it does not deny either. Nor, does it indicate what documentation I should have on hand to show medically necessary. Any info you can provide would be great.

If you can show that your surgery is due to morbid obesity and not "cosmetic" then yes, it may be added to your rx's and copays, etc to write off.  Please remember you may only write off anything above 7.5% of your total AGI.   Ex: Total AGI: 50000 Cap: $3750 Anything above $3760 may be written off.
