Has anyone been approved without a 5 year weight history of morbid obesity when their insurance company required it?  I have documentation of my weight over the last 5 years, and although I was obese all those years, I was not what is considered "morbidly obese".  Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated!  I have BCBS of NC State Employee

As far as I have read you need to have either a 40 BMI for 5 years OR have a 35+ BMI with one sometimes two co-morbidities.  My insurance BCBS of NJ, said you dont "HAVE" to have all 5, but my surgeon says the customer service department doesnt really know much hehe!  Hope this helps some.

Hello Marie
I have asked this question before. i had some responders say they were approved w/out itbec. they had co-morbids. i also saw some say that they got approved w/out the 5yrs after having a peer to peer reveiw. I only have 2 yrs med notes bec. i didn't have insurance, so i hope they approve me. time will tell. as far as the 5years not being over 40bmi the whole time. Fight it if they deny bec obese is obese and at least a 35bmi is obese so they should approve.

Hi!!  I have BCBS federal employee program insurance and I was approved with only one year of weights and a weigh****chers card from 4 years ago.  I had no co-morbidities, but my BMI was a little over 60.  I sent pictures in that were dated on the back from the photo processing center.  I sent one for each year and was approved in 3 days!  I hope this helps.  Good Luck!!
