insurance says RNY complication not covered

A week ago I had adhesions removed from my intestine which were cutting off the circulation.  Insurance found out I had RNY and denied the claim stating it was a complication of the procedure.  Anyone know how soon after a procedure extensive adhesions could develop?  I had similar removed from an ovary over 10 years ago 3 years after two csxns.  After last weeks surgery dr said it was caused by the csxn and gallbladder surgeries.  Anyone else have this exclusion issue.  Are they going to exclude everything from now on?  If so, anyone know of a MO insurance company that will cover RNY complications?  Thanks Michelle

Hi Vicki I have BCBS. Its an HSA plan with a high deductible.  The plan has an exclusion for gastric bypass.  I paid 100% out of pocket for the surgery.  I spoke with my Dr's office yesterday.  My dr is appealing it.  He did a peer review.  He requested to speak with a surgeon instead of another physician.  After consulting the surgeon agreed to review my preop reports, etc.  This was more than they did initially.  I'm hoping this is a good sign. I'll keep you posted.  Thanks for the offer.  Michelle

Good good.   Peer reviews are usually a good thing, they basically will review it on the back end with the pre op reports thats a good thing.   Best of luck to you but if you need anything let me know I will help anyway I can.  Even though there is an exclusion for WLS these things could have developed even if you didnt have RNY so I can not possibly see how they could out right deny it based with any pre op or post op records.   See there again these insurance companies sit up there and deny things and most likely it was a lay person and not someone with a MD after their name. grrrrrrrrhhhhh... Good luck Michelle Vicki

Gary she had the RNY self pay as her insurance would not cover it .   She is having some problems that were or probably not related to the RNY but insurance is saying because she had RNY the problems were related and will not pay.  Her provider is appealing because more likely than not her complication had nothing to do with the orginal RNY
