Last night's "Lost"
As far as I can tell, they are crash survivors (as opposed to "Others") who were, as I put it, brought up from the minors to the big leagues.
There were supposed to be something like 46 survivors from that part of the plane, so there a quite a few characters that can be introduced as needed. Unfortunately, they don't usually get explained, they're just, all of a sudden, cutting fruit at the table with Hurley, for example.
Every once in a while, the writers/producers will throw new characters in the background of a scene, then make them more prominent. It's basically to replace characters as they get killed off (last night, for example.) I call them "cannon fodder" since, usually, they get offed pretty quickly.
I missed it! Who got killed off last night??? Its really bad because I also like Biggest Loser and they come on at the same time. I try to jump back and forth during commercials, but I miss big chunks of Lost when I do that.

Too bad, too! I've liked that actor, going all the way back to HBO's "Oz".
But every time he came on camera, I kept thinking, "Hee hee. Seen you naked!!" Same thing happens when I see Chris Meloni on "Law and Order."
One thing bugged me about last night's episode, though. Eco's accent is African, since that's where the actor's from. But did the accent of the African "warlord" sound annoyingly JAMAICAN??
actually that was desmond who was already in the hatch--and he is no Rodrigo!! Rodrigo was the one who came out of the can when they all went to hatch#2 to investigate.
Bette you're right--they do bring in the background characters too suddenly--I never guessed that those two were just fellow survivors I thought I had missed part of an episode. Some of the background ppl just come and go, such as Rose and her husband and an awful lot just get offed; I could tell echo would be a one season wonder. But it shocked me that they got rid of Shannon and the stepbrother--I don't understand why they had to go.
Well after last night's episode at least we know how the hallucinations and sightings are happening!

That was desmond that was in the hatch pushing numbers when Jack and them came in. I love Lost i've been addicted to it since the first show. I think I need to take trip to Hawaii. LOL
I love how they just do that. Like these people came out of nowhere. OK, so what's with the black stuff that killed Echo? Just when things seem to be normal they throw some strange thing like that into the mix.
