I went to the DR today for my second fill and she said it looks like some of the fill she gave me before had evaporated... is this true?? and if so what caused it??

Hmmm. usually people who have fluid go missing say that they have a leak. I don't see how it could evaporate when air isn't supposed to be getting in there. I've never had any fluid go missing between fills.

I just read in my lap-band bible that it is very common to lose some fluid between the first and second fills.  The same thing happened to me. I freaked at first because I am self-pay and I figured something was wrong.  I was glad to see it in my book.  It's a great book to have on hand by the way  to answer any questions you might have.  It's called Lap-Band for Life. The complete Patient Guide to success with the Lap-Band by Ariel Ortiz Lagardere MD FACS.

The Band system is a closed system, so nothing can really evalporate. To evaporate, things must be exposed to air. I'm sure she didn't mean literally "evaporate." It's common to have a small bit of fill not be able to be withdrawn - up to 0.5 cc (1/2 a cc) is considered normal in the smaller bands. Maybe 2 cc or so in the larger bands. the fluid can get stick behind small kinks, be stuck behind a tiny air bubble, be caught in the normal vaccuum in the band, and much more. It's also easy to lose a bit of fill in withdrawing the needle, unless a stop-**** is used, and most fill people don't use them.  If a larger amount thyan above is missing for 2-3 fills in a row, or if the band has nothing much left in it, one has to susoect a leak. In this case, a special safe dye is inserted into the band thru the port, and a fluoroscopy is done to look for the leak. It will show ehere the dye is leaking out. Small leaks may not be found until the 3rd or even 4th daily fluorro is done. I know one person whose tiny leak was not found until the 7th fluoro over almost 2 weeks. They can be tricky to find. Some recent studies are suggesting that a tiny amt of fill might leave the band by osmosis when the person is at goal and the fill is not being touched for many months or years at a time. This has been documented as perhaos 0.1-0.2 cc over 12 months time. More studies are needed, but it's possible that we may need a small fill touch-up along with our yearly exam and yearly fluoro after goal. The fluoro is needed to be sure all is well and none of the longer-term band problems are starting to occur. THis doesn't concern me at all - I will do WHATEVER is needed to keep my band and stomach happy and functioning well. That thought helped me along the way too - whenever I had a barf, or was stalled out, or hated the band temporarily - I always asked myself if my life was better at a lower weight and in better health, and if the band was worth it.  My answer to myself was always "YES, and I'd do this sgain in a second!"
