Hi Kathie! The colored text below is a hyperlink to another post. It's a list of common Lap-Band questions, sort of a "Frequently Asked Questions" post. Number 11 (SORRY! I gave the WRONG NUMBER!)  on the list addresses your specific question. KathieSue, if you have been getting only 600 cal a day for any length of time, your body is very deficient and shocked and it will take some time (possibly 1-2 months by now) with a good , reliable intake to convince your body it's ok to start to lose a bit. Your doc is very wise - 1200-1500 cal a day is perfect. for most women.  You're going to need some extra patience here, if your body has been malnouished for awhile, to get back on track. In the meantime, revfiew all the band rules re protein, fiber, calciumn, exercise, fluids etc and be sure you're doing pretty well with them. Your doc will hopefully have other ideas when you see him next week. SAndy R

Dear Sandy: My other Doctor, did not have me on any fiber at all.  They just have me taking stool softeners every day.  This new Doc, that I haven't seen, said Yes, you have to have fiber in your diet.  So, I am really looking forward to meeting him.  His nurse has already increased my caloric intake to 1200 and above, and put fiber into my body.  I appreciate your thoughts!  I have thought myself, for a long time, that, my diet was incorrect.  Even though I wasn't eating enough, I was depriving myself!  There were days, I didn't even want to get out of bed.  All of that, and how the Doctor treated me, is why I have decided to change.  I was almost ready to have the band removed.  I appreciate everything!Kathie

KathieSue, fiber is essentiual both for band loss and for bowel health - prevention of things like bowel cancer, diverticulitis, and other serious things. Not many of have have likely paid attentnio to our fiber needs before - and this is why the rate of bowel cancer is increasing so rapidly.  I'd forgotten it was Dr Melvin you're going to see - thanks to Dee's great help for you - and he is just excellent.  You'll be back on track soon!

Don't even think about band removal.  Give yourself a chance with Dr. Melvin to get on track and get a fill and work with it.  It's much too soon to give up on anything.  You haven't been getting nearly enough calories for a very long time...it's no wonder you weren't feeling good.  You will get straightened away of that I'm sure...hang in there. Your appt. is coming up soon. Luv ya, Dee
