carbonation, once in a blue moon ok?
Some people have discomfort with soda and some do not. If you don't have any discomfort when drinking it, it is probably fine to have one now and then. many of us do.

The Nurse Practitioner who works with my surgeon said no carbonated drinks for at least 6 months and more likely never.

My blue moon came.. and i had horrific... GAS pains that came about 20 minutes after i took some good size sips... it was not pop.. but they came... and oh MY ... I could have had someone kill me if i knew that was gonna happen.. the sad part was i did NOT know it was carbonated... Pain i will NEVER ask on anyone EVER... as for my future.. i do not see anything carbonated in it!!!! I am better off..
Like my dr said though... TRY IT!
Pain or no pain you should be aware that the reason they advise against it is because it can cause band slippage. That's not something I'd personally want to risk over some nasty carbonation. My surgeon advises if you absolutely have to have soda, let it sit out open over night to de-fizz. It's ok to drink then, of course if you do that, you'll probably wonder why you wanted to drink it in the first place.
It's up to your surgeon. Some surgeons 100% forbid any carbonation. Some say it's ok if you let it sit long enough to get somewhat flat.
It cannot "damage" your band...it can, however, cause bad discomfort for some people. The pouch is not sealed off so the notion that gas can stretch your pouch like a sealed balloon is fallacy. However, trapped gas (below your band in the main part of your stomach) can be extremely painful and that's never good.
So, talk to your surgeon and do what he/she instructs.
