Dr. Curry, I had gastric bypass 8 years ago and unfortunately regained back most of my weight.  I can't make up my mind if I want to have a lapband placed in or have a full revision where I would be bypassed more and have my pouch tighten.  My question for you is how do people who had prior bypass surgery do with with a lap band?  Are results the same as people who have not had surgery?  Also, I hear about a lot of complication with the lapband.  Do you think most problems occur from being banded too tight?  Thanks for your help.

Patients who had previous bypass surgery lose weight very slowly with the band as they already have a smaller stomach.  There are complications, as are there with bypass.  You have to make sure you are following a healthy diet that is not too high in carbs to be succesful. Hello Dr C.  I have been approved to have the gastric bypass or lapband procedure by my insurance and I weigh 266 pounds at 5'8'' tall male.  What I have been reading lately is that the gastric bypass surgery has successfully sent diabetes into full remission for patients with Type 2 Diabetes.  Whereas I have also read that the lap band doesn't send it into full remission but restricts the amount of calories that you intake.

I have had Diabetes for 15 years and I was wondering which you would recommend for me?

Thanks..

The remission rate for diabetes is higher with sleeve and bypass than it is for band, but it is still pretty good for band as well.  It's hard to recommend a procedure for a specific patient without seeing them in consultation unfortunately.

Good luck!

Dr.Curry,     I had my lap band surgery on friday October 19th. Everything seems to be going well with my recovery except for last night (21st)  I began to get muscle spasms in both of my legs. I've been giving my self heparin shots every 8 hrs since friday. I called my surgeons office today and they said if its happening in both legs then its probably not a big deal.... if it was only one leg they would've had me come in and get a scan to check for blood clots. What do you think about this? Is this something I should be concerned about? Have you had patients that have had this? Thank you for your time. Michelle

Michelle, Please contact me.  I too am suffering from muscle spasms in my legs.  The docs can't seem to figure out what the deal is.  I am curious to know if you have been diagnosed with something at this point.   Thanks, Patti

I have been having cramps in my legs and feet for years now and I haven't had surgery yet!  maybe it is a not related.  If you figure out how to stop the spasms please let me know because my doctors have no idea! Kathy2852
