I have this "fear" that I might need my intestines later on down the line.

I've heard it said that having RNY is like using a sledgehammer to crack a nut. My little nutcracker is working just fine for me.   Perhaps down the road, if it isn't enough - then I have the option of doing something else. In addition, since obesity is such a serious issue, there may be medical advances one day that could render WLS obsolete.  If that happens, won't it be nice  to have something that can be reversed.

I agree with all of the above. I also like the maintenace factor that we have with the band. If I find myself eating too much a couple of years down the road, I can still go in for a little more fill to help me out. I know I can lose weight - it's keeping it off that I need help with! Jean B.

And now this may be wrong , and I am sure someone will correct me if it is, but I did read somewhere that with the RNY you have a window of about 18 months where you lose most of what you are going to lose, then you can be in danger of gaining.  The article mentioned slipping  back into old habits once their pouches heal and get accustomed to the diet, the "dumping syndrome" that some RNYers depend on to keep them honest, subsides and they find themselves more able to eat the sweets they crave.  I can't remember what the rest of it said.   With the band, years out, if I find that I am eating more than I should or starting to gain, I can go back to my surgeon and get a fill, hopefully get more restriction and get back on track....  I chose the band for all the same reasons everyone else did.  It was the logical choice for me.   For some, it is the DS, the RNY, the sleeve.  For me, it was the band.  I don't care WHAT tool someone uses to lose weight.  The important thing is that they lose it and find a healthier happier them!  I applaud anyone who rocks their tool and makes it work for them!

All the reasons listed above, but the absolute dealbreaker for me and the rny was the supplements.  I am not good at being cconsistent with any medication.  If it were my only choice, I would have had the rny and worked to change, but it wasn't my only choice, so I'm losing weight and STILL inconsistent with taking meds.

I agree with all the reasons above....and the other reason was I still want to get pregnant and have one more kid and I wanted to be sure if that happened we could get the nutrients we need.

I had this strange vision if I had RNY the 3 stooges would be standing over me someday in white coats stroking their gotees, shaking their heads (mostly Moe  lol) saying,"if she only had that 6" of he intestine we could have saved her."  YIKES All the reasons above, especially the slower loss and the skin keeping up, no suppliments like with RNY, No dumping, no hair loss etc... It was just the right choice for me.  I lurked here for 4 yrs I think because I could not talk myself into the RNY being necessary for me.  I know lots of folks locally who have had RNY and love it but it just was not for me.  Susan ps Welcome aboard
