LUMP ON WRIST ON ARM THAT HAD THE IV
I had a horrible day nurse the day of and the day after surgery. The same person. Night nurse was wonderful.
On the day I was to be released, she gave me a shot of blood thinner called Enoxaparin in the tummy. This was not okay'd by my surgeon. The IV bled and she only tighted the tape... twice. Now I have a golf ball size very painful lump on my wrist. If you follow the hardness, it is in the vein leading to where the IV was.
When she removed the IV for me to go home. Blood just poured out like it was an artery. She says.. oh you are a bleeder.
I just read this could be a clot in the vein. Now what? I am so mad I could spit nails. I noticed it yesterday as I was driving to the store.

Don't hesitate to call your doctor if you are concerned about it. The vein in my hand was sore and swollen and red longer than my incisions, and I remember calling the doctor's PA to make sure that was okay. They deal with this stuff all the time, and they are there to help you.
Hope it feels better, soon.

Wow! I know it hurts!
When I had my blood drawn for my pre ops....I dont think that nurse had a clue! she was poking and digging. I ended up with a lump the size of a lemon on the inside of my elbow and ALOT of brusing. It was very tender to the touch.
After consulting with my Mommy (cause mommies know everything) she said it would go down and there must have been a little bleeding inside from the nurse digging around. I went with my mom's answer.
The swelling did go away. For me, it depends on the person who is taking my blood. I had many blood tests done in the past year and a half cause my PCP is keeping an eye on my cholesterol. Sometimes I bruise alot and sometimes I dont. It doesnt seem to matter if it is painful when they do the procedure or not, but mostly if it is more painful, there is more bruising.
Now, I dont know about a shot. I have had an IV leave a lump. As a matter of fact, Im almost 6 moths out and I can still see the little dot where my IV was from my surgery in my hand.
Hope you are feeling better soon. Call your doc and see what they say especially if the shot was not "approved".

Try warm (NOT HOT) compresses on the site. I had the same thing when I had a different surgery. I tend to bruise very easily and whenever I get IVs or blood drawn I always get little hematomas under the site. Warm compresses seem to work. Good luck. And don't hesitate to call your doc if you are nervous. He/She should definitely understand :)
Hi, sorry about your arm. Try the warm compresses, it will help the swelling go down.
The injection you had is a mild blood thinner. The new protocol in hospitals is some form of blood thinner. At my hospital we have standing orders for pts that have surgery. I don't know about your hospital. We can give them without doctors orders if certain criteria exsist. The same with say, flu shots or pneumonia shots.
Sorry you had a horrible stay. I hope you feel better soon,
Hugs, Leslie

The shot you received is a blood thinner and it is pretty standard policy... in my hospital anyway. Anyone who just had surgery or is on bedrest gets it atleast once a day. I also don't think this had anything to do with you bleeding when she took the IV out. Some people are just "bleeders" How long ago was your surgery. It could be phlebitis or an infiltrate. Elevate and warm compresses and it should go away.
My nurses were horrible, well for the amt of time I saw them. I pretty much only saw my nurse on admission (she was good). I don't even know what their names are. The other shifts I didn't see them at all. The nurse the day of my discharge was not very nice and kept asking me "What's the matter with you" Well, everytime I got up to walk in the middle of the night because I couldn't sleep, they would push Morphine into my IV and said "That will help you sleep". The most potent drug I take is tylenol so perhaps I was heavily drugged and I just went through a surgery that was a major life change. Maybe that's what was the matter with me!!! Or maybe I'm more comfortable walking around and I don't want to sleep. Anyway, that was my first and hopefully last hospital admission.
BTW.. I am a RN so I know the drill about seeing and assessing your patients and offering support and such.
I'm just rambling now because that stay was absolutely horrible and it brings back very bad memories.
