Protein mixes and gag reflex

My favorite was the EAS Chocolate made with skim milk and ice in the blender.  I would call your doc and ask about adding peanut butter or 1/2 banana.
I couldn't tolerate anything strawberry.  Too sweet and had a terribly strong smell.

I use Pure Proteing pre-mixed shakes to take to work they are pretty good and have a ton of protein, 31 g.  I find mine at Target.

Hang in there!

Are they mandatory for you? I never had any! Don't like them and my nut doesn't either, thankfully. You can make your own high protein drinks by adding high protein items like chick peas and soya beans to a basic soup mix and blending until totally smooth.

I, too, had problems with protein shake mixes.  I have a very sensitive gag reflex, so I had to figure out a way to get around it.  In the begining, I found that I could handle Carnation Instant Breakfast, mixed with skim milk.  I soon found that they didn't have enough protein in them, so I started mixing in fat free powdered milk to bump up the protein content.  However, it's not very convenient to do it that way.  I found the ready to drink Carnation Instant Breakfast in plastic bottles, which made it easier to toss into my lunch box and go.  Earlier this summer, we planned a trip to Montana to visit my husband's family.  I didn't pack any protein shakes, because I thought I'd be able to find them at the local grocery, but I was wrong.  I ended up having to travel to the next town, where I found a GNC that carried Myoplex ready to drink protein shakes.  While they do have a stronger protein powder taste and smell, they are more palatable for me than the other powdered shakes out there.  Protein shakes, of any kind, taste better when they're ice cold, so if you have to take a sip, and put it back in the fridge for awhile, do it.  You don't have to drink the whole thing right away.  As long as you get your required amount in, in a day, you're good to go.  My personal opinion is to go for the ready to drinks.  They're a little thicker than powdered ones, but it's easier to take with you, and I think they taste better.  Best of luck in your protein shake search.

You said clear liquids with protein 3 times a day and you are on pre op?  I have never heard of a clear liquid preop diet.

If it has to be clear you cannot even have most of the protein mixes on the market.  I would call your drs. office for clarificaiton.  I have only heard of a clear liquid diet after surgery.

Having said that someone monetioned the high protein drink mixes from the kool-aid section of the store.  I have had a special K brand one that was OK.  It made the drink slightly slimy but I mixed one with twice as much water as called for and added a crystal light sachet and sipped on it during the day...i could get it down and it tasted OK.

I had the same type of pre-op diet:  two weeks of clear liquids (no sugar or caffeine) with protein shakes.  It's done to reduce the size of the liver and anymore is pretty common.

I finally found one!!!!! Jay Rob Whey Protein - Tropical Dreamsicle, No awful taste, no awful smell, heck even when I belched it tasted like oranges (gross detail I know). But I am only 6 days from surgery and I haven't been able to get the right amount of protein yet. This is a huge relief!

How about Isopure?  It's clear and 20 oz has 40 grams of protein?

I thought this would be a problem for me too.  I also was to have clear liquids.  My DH found ISOPURE.  It is a protein water and tastes really good.  Sweet.  It comes in several flavors such as Grape Frost, an apple one, a punch flavored one, Blue Rasperry.  It comes in a 20 oz. bottle and has 40 grams of protein each DRINK.

I couldn't handle all that protein shake stuff either.

Try it, I really think it will work for you.  I am 3 weeks out and am still drinking it.

Good luck!
