acid reflux before surgery

OK so my journey so far has been almost year eaxactly from the very first information seminar. I did the six months with my GP, dieted and exercised, was diagnosed with hypothyroid and finally settled on the band. I got my surgery date of 4/9/10. Six weeks! (well it was eight when they set it, but whatever... ;-)

So yesterday the doctor's assistant calls and says my upper GI revealed some significant reflux. I did tell the doctor I've had it for a long time and been on nexium (3x a week or so for a couple years) and that I knew there were some risks for continued reflux after banding and he seemed OK with that. So now this latest development may threaten me getting a band at all.

Has anyone had any experience with pre-banding acid reflux? And what the outcome was post-banding? I read some people actually stopped having problems with it after banding, while some got worse and some stayed the same.

I've just come so far; I don't feel like I should give up on this and settle for RNY, which I really don't want at all.

Thanks in advance, bandster angels. You are all inspirational to me.

I had reflux before my band surgery too and still do, but it's the same as before.  If I eat too fast or don't chew enough I get a heartburn feeling and it took me like 2 months to diagnose the difference between real heartburn and me being stupid.  :)  Good luck, I still hope you get the OK.

I had reflux pre band.  Immediately post op (first 3-4 weeks) it did worsen.  Since then, it's the same or better than it was pre band.  My surgeon proceeded with mine (after an esophageal manometry showed weakened muscles, too) on the premise that my food quantities would be smaller and after consultation with a surgical practice in FL that has done research on the matter.

I had horrible acid reflux before banding but my upper GI revealed a hiatal hernia which they repaired during banding. Since surgery, I have had NO acid reflux. I also make sure I stop eating 3 hrs before bedtime to avoid any acid reflux issues and it work.

Acid reflux would not be a reason not to do the band.  I had really bad reflux and was on meds for it.  I had a very large hiatal hernia and they had to put mesh in with my surgery.  I was taken off of the relux med a few months after surgery and have had NO reflux since surgery.

I had horrible reflux before the band, they found a hiatal hernia and repaired it during my surgery. Not one day of reflux since!! Good luck!

Wow, thanks all. I feel much better. The good news is that the case manager who called me and told me about what the upper GI revealed (just the reflux, no hernia or anything) also said that she'd leave the appointment scheduled, speak to the doctor and call me today. No call came, so I'm hopeful that when he looked at the report and the notes from my previous appointment with him he decided it wasn't a big risk that would threaten surgery.

I'll keep you posted. See, I knew ya'll would help ease my mind.
