Band-Friendly Restaurant in Myrtle Beach, SC

I was in Myrtle Beach, SC for the weekend and dreaded meeting friends for dinner because of the "buffet" at the restaurant they wanted to eat at, Crabby Mikes. I had a nice surprise to find out that they have a separate menu for bariatric patients to choose from that is $9.99. They give you a choice of 5 different kinds of seafood (fried) and a choice of side item. Even though it was not really the healthiest meal, the portion size was great! They do require you show the bariatric meal card from your surgeon. If you do not have one, ask your surgeon or the nutritionist about getting one.

I just wanted to share this info. I have been at restaurants that never take into consideration that we eat really small portions and have to pay for full size portions. The full buffet at this restaurant was $24.99, so it sure saved me some bucks!!

Excellent!  Now I have something else to ask my doc tomorrow morning. Thanks!

I know that I'm gonna get slammed for saying this, but I'm gonna say it anyway.

I don't expect any restaurant to accommodate me because I had WLS. My doctor gave me a card, but I threw it in the trash.
Restaurants did not charge me extra when I could "eat the whole buffet", so I don't expect them to give me a discount now that I can't.

Thanks for that post. Myrtle Beach is like a second home to me. My family has been going there for close to 40 years. I just had my LB last week. It's good to know that restaurants accommodate.

OMG, a buffet for $24.99, Yikes!  I live in Iowa and that sounds really expensive!  Also I've never seen a special price for bariatric patients.  I just ask for a to-go box when I order my meal and when my meal is served I just put at least 1/2 of it in the box.

@amystone - I don't think you'll get slammed.  Really you're right.  Restaurants make their purchase choices off of how they prepare food (big portions/buffet/fine dining), not on how much someone can eat.

I do think it's great that the buffet had an option with the understanding that there will be less food consumed (and maybe they can do it because of how they prepare the food?).

I also ask if I can order off the kids menu (depending on the items), or ask for a box up front.  So, I suppose it doesn't hurt to ask if a place has a smaller plated option for less price and show your card (if necessary) if it's available.

I normally ask for take out box as soon as I get my food or order from kids menu, but what I got was actually cheaper than the kids price. I didn't get to choose my food, which was a good thing. I have a hard time with any buffet. There are slider foods that will put me way over what I am supposed to have and never stop in the band. All in all, I was quite happy with the food and the price.

Well shoot!  Getting better thank kids price is excellent!  even if you don't get to choose the food.

Thanks for posting this buffet - I live on the other coast, but if I ever got out there I'd have to check it out!

For all you banster's who visit Myrtle Beach, another great restaurant is Burro Loco, mexican.

I have found the following from their menu to be very tasty and band friendly. (minus the rice and tortillia's)  The portion is big so you will have leftovers but they heat well in the microwave.

The pork is seasoned well, the veggies are delicious and the black beans are good too.

My favorite is:

Pork Picado

mesquite-grilled, marinated pork tenderloin served over onions, peppers, mushrooms and bacon, then topped with monterey jack cheese. Served with rice and flour tortiallas.

Enjoy the beach,
