Nobody here, including WLS vets have ever heard of such a surgery but you know FOUR.
What surgery type is this?
Why don't you ever defend your claims with evidence? You run around making these wild accusations and when asked for just ONE study, one peer reviewed source you just run away.
Posting incorrect information on a board where newbies are reading is verrry not cool.

Okay, let's play fair. It's not cool to comment on things you appear to know nothing about. There are NO surgeries that involve removing your intestines and only two where a portion of your stomach is removed (VSG and DS). Even if a person has the full on DS treatment, the intestinal portion of the DS is fully reversible. The sleeve portion is not because there is no 'blind stomach'. The portion of the stomach that is sectioned from the sleeve is removed and thus, not reversible. So, any surgery where you would need a portion of your intestines removed would still be possible. Most Americans NEED to take vitamins daily. Our food doesn't provide us with nearly enough bio-available vitamins and minerals (enrichment usually provides the cheapest form of vitamins and minerals, regardless of bio-availability) and so most of us are deficient in something or another. May I ask you some questions? What are the side effects of taking vitamins daily as opposed to most prescription medications to treat our various comorbidities from being MO or SMO? How much more expensive is it to suppliment with vitamins and minerals than it is to pay for prescription drugs?
I'm not going to sway anyone who has already decided their path with WLS. However, at the very least, understand, FULLY, all of your options and make an informed and wise choice. It's your life.
Damn, you are very cool.

I really think you mean well< ABEQUA> But please, PLEASE, stop talking about things you don't understand.
NO WLS currently performed removes ANY intestine. Everybody needs vitamins, even people with a Band. (Yes, that means YOU.)
And no, it doesn't depend on how fast she wants to lose weight---it depends on how LONG she wants to keep it off, and how HARD she can/wants to work at it.

I have had a Lapband for over 9 years, yes Nine years. You don't see too many people who have had a Lapband that long, because most of them have had problems and had it removed, or have revised to another surgery. You are Super Morbidly Obese, if you get the Lapband the odds are stacked against you, and you should also plan to have to have another surgery or two or three in the future, Lapbands do not last for the life of the patient. I myself refused the RNY, although my insurance would have paid for it. Why? Because it has a high rate of regain and failure, and if you go to the Revision board you will find lots of RNY'ers looking to fix their surgery somehow. If you were my daughter I'd suggest the DS, I will not recommend the Lapband to anyone after living with it for 9 years. The Lapband is a chokechain, and it will choke you, and you will learn to eat around it, and it will not save you from Obesity. Good Luck.
I didn't read any of the other posts, but I'm going to tell you my experience with my band.
In 2004 I was 23 (turned 24 the week of surgery) and 475lbs. I'm 5'8. I was to have a lap RNY my surgeon ended up doing a vertical banded gastroplasty (a non-adjustable band) while in the OR. That's another story for another time. I was devastated when I came home and started reading the success rates. I knew it was unlikely I'd get to my goal weight with the VBG but I gave it a good try! By 2007 I had stalled at 297lbs, despite journaling my food every day and going to Curves. I joined W eight W acthers and by the summer of 2008 I was 225lbs. But I counted every damn point along the way!
Eventually, I got tired of dieting. I have done more dieting with this band than before the surgery. I've done every low carb diet you can image. My iron levels are in the toilet now and I'm border line anemic. I can no longer eat animal protein. 2-3 bites of most meats, poultry, and some vegetables fill me up. But it's an uncomfortable stuck feeling in my chest. And worse. I'm still hungry, but I can't get anything down with those few bites stuck at the band. I can't even drink after those bites. If I try to eat or drink, it will come back up. I will have to vomit or I'll belch and the food will regurgitate back up.
Due to a lack of being able to eat normally, I eat what goes down the easiest. And guess what does down the easiest, the high caloric foods and drinks that I love so much and tastes so good. So I've gained back up to 314 lbs, while being malnourished according to my lab work. My reflux has worsened and I vomit daily from food that gets "stuck". And I'm 314 lbs.
There are many people who are successful with bands, but honestly it was NEVER for me. Only you truly know what you're capable of and what your food issues are. I really tried. You don't lose 250lbs with a band without trying. But in the end, I feel like I have foreign object inside of my body working against me.
No matter what option you choose, please continue to do your research, visit the revision boards, and good luck to you.
Please PM me if you need anything.
