Confused

 Hey Mary,

I went into this whole thing thinking that I wanted to have the band too.  However, when I went to the surgens seminar he told us that he has to remove 60% of bands by year 3 because of side effect and that about 15% of people who keep them have them open all the way so that they don't have any restriction (also due to side effects).  He said the rest suffer.  Give yourself a fighting chance!  If you are going to have surgery, get one that is going to get you to goal and have to stay there.

Want to eat butter, cream, full fat cheese and endless meat with normal portions with no throwing up?  The DS is for you!  Plus we have a kick-ass forum here on OH.

Hi, Mary,

I had lap DS 13 months ago and it has changed my life 150 % for the better.  No more limping from sore feet & knees.  No more sleeping with a machine hooked to my face (sexy, huh?) No more high blood pressure or high cholesterol.  No more pre-diabetes.

You look quite young in your avi so you probably don't experience this now, but it will come if you can't get the weight off and keep it off.  I wish all surgeries were created equal, but they are not.

Was I scared of surgery, yeah, sure was.  Would I do it again? You bet.

This is a hard decision for anyone.  Please study all the information you've been given.  You must make an informed choice.  I hope you choose the DS.

Lots of people have told you why the DS is probably a better choice for someone of your size. Some other things youo need to think about are medical issues, even if you have none yet. What about a family history of diabetes or high cholesterol? Arthritis? Asthma? Degenerative joint disease? And so on.

The DS has THE best stats on resolving or preventing co-morbs like diabetes and high cholesterol. If you suffer from arthritis---or think you might in the future---you really DON'T want to give up the ability to take NSAIDs. (Pretty much ALL OTC pain relievers, like aspirin, Aleve, Advil, Motrin, etc.) Headaches? Cramps/ Sprains, muscle pains? NSAIDs are the drugs of choice.

I chose the DS for a LOT of reason, and I'll confess, a big one is that I LIKE TO EAT. I did not want to spent the rest fo my life watching what I ate. (By the time I had WLS, I'd already spent the last 35  of my 45 years dieting. NO MORE.) That meant that I needed the form of WLS that would do the most of the work FOR me.

I'd done enough dieting to know that *I* would never be happy unless I could eat any and all of the wonderful things the world has to offer. I wanted something that would allow me to be satisfied with smaller portions, but at the same time allow me to eat enough to satisfy my mouth as well as my stomach. This meant I needed malabsorption. And my body was just too damned efficient at "getting by" by burning very few calories. This meant that I needed the metabolic change that only the DS would give me.

I was seven years post-op on Dec.11, 2010. I eat 2500-3000 tasty calories every day, and I've had ZERO regain. I really DO eat pretty much whatever and however much I want---but I must add that I just naturally prefer a high-protein, high-fat diet. I eat protein first, veggies second, breads and sweets last.

I take vitamins and minerals four times a day, or every time I eat. It's ahabit, and it's no more trouble than brushing my teeth. (*grin*)

Research EVERYTHING, and choose carefully. Read the Revision board. Read THIS thread:www.obesityhelp.com/forums/amos/4299472/Help-1-weight-loss-surgery-

I came to this board over a year ago. I was interested in the band, too. But then I read about the DS, and my physician told me the band is not appropriate for people with large amounts to lose. (I have even more to lose than you!) And surgery is surgery, remember that. A good friend told me that when I got to the point where I realized that I needed surgery or I would die from obesity-related complications. I told him I wanted the least invasive surgery. He told me, "ALL surgery is invasive! All surgery has risks."

Now, almost 4 months after my DS, I have lost over 100lbs.
Best decision I ever made.

ETA: I won't go into technicalities, others do that far better than I do. I'm just saying for me, I could not be more grateful for the DS. I am so glad I looked into it.

I believe CRUEL is the word you're looking for and it only seems that way to people who have no clue what they are talking about.

Buh bye
