I think anyone will tell you that the early bands, their placement, and the understanding of how to use them bear little resemblance to a 2012 band.
This data ending 10 years ago has helped the banding technology tremendously.
Early cars were less safe, but by evaluating accidents we learned to use seat belts, and air bags.
Frightening people that are desperate for weight loss to save their lives using data from old banding may make maria feel like she is doing her duty to warn others because she had such a nightmare (and I AM NOT saying that those things don't still happen to a lessor degree), but I feel that the majority of people benefit from the band and it is still a very good option in WLS.
Data from this decade will look much different than from the 90's when banding was in it's infancy.
All it takes is just a quick glance on this forum and you will realize that the new bands have no better results than the older bands. How many do you see on here that are 5 years out that haven't had to have a 2nd surgery? How many are 5 years out and haven't had complications?? Hell how many are just 5 years out??? Now since the B.S. excuse I usually see to that is that there are so many successfull bandsters out there............but the band has made them so happy and skinny that then no longer have time to post on here. Let's pretend that that claim was actually true............SO WHERE ARE ALL THESE HAPPY, SKINNY, SUCCESSFUL, NO COMPLICATION BANDSTERS IN REAL LIFE?!?!?! NOT online. Where are these that you actually KNOW in real life??? I know one. Kind of sad don't you think??????????? How many successful, skinny, no complication long term WLS'ers do I know from the other 3 WLS? MANY! Common sense tells the effectiveness of the CRAP-BAND!
Some of us are that far out and haven't had major complications.

And that's wonderful that you are! Unfortunately............that is NOT the case for MOST and you know that. Those that are researching the band need to realize how rare that is!!!
Hope your LUCK continues!
A band is a band is a band. Until our bodies are made from materials that are less likely to erode when in contact with a silastic band, it makes little difference if a band is from 10 years ago or yesterday. They all have the same basic premise... constrict the stomach to allow small portions of food only. The stomach "rebels" against a foreign body squeezing it. What material used or with what method it's attached makes little to no difference.
From my perspective, banding is still in its infancy. And it's most likely not going to get better any time soon. What is going to happen is this: people will believe the hype the manufacturers sell. They will proceed with banding, believing this is the "cure" for their obesity; eventually develop complications; become physically damaged; want to revise to another form of weight loss surgery but be unable because of the fact that so many insurance companies are implementing the "one WLS per lifetime" clause; regain AND have the unfortunate side effects the band caused. No one wins except for the people making money from the sale of the lapband.
I've been fairly diplomatic for years... but my true belief is that the band works for very few... and that's just not how the thing is portrayed. It preys upon our desire to be thin and healthy, promising both... and failing to mention the horrible things you have to go through to get there... if you ever do.

I felt the same way 7+ years ago when I started this process. I chose to stay off the boards at that time, and then 5 years after surgery I decided to create a place where it was safe to discuss things in a private forum that was not open to the public . I partnered with another lap band patient who felt the exact same way and www.bandedliving.com was "born". Check us out and let us know what you think.

Yoursa is very well done btw. But just wondering what you mean by "a place where it was safe to discuss things in a private forum that was not open to the public . "???
I just don't understand the "safe" thing. Just from what I have observed so far, it seems that those bandster groups make theirselves "private" so they can post about their band issues so others don't see them. My feeling is that all band issues should be public so pre-ops can read what the band really is like. Both the possitive AND the negative so they can get a realistic view of the band. That being said, I'm NOT saying that is the motivation behind yours, just that I have noticed it in other band groups. Of course you have the right to have your site private, but I just think it benefits everyone to be able to get as much info about the band as they can. Not just a one sided view. That is why I actually have some possitive band posts on my WLS blog, because I think there is the responsibility to post a realistic view of the band, even though mine has been nothing but negative.

Do you have a monthly support group ?
Look, miss.pug started this thread asking for more information on this site and you posted an article. I pointed out that the article references early banding experience.
Using all caps or lots of question marks doesn't change a thing that I said.
Obviously, though, the number of content banders hanging out and posting on an on-line forum has nothing to do with the number of complications that the modern band has.
Maria, I'm sorry that you had a bad experience with the band. Millions of people have lost lots of weight and kept much of it off. Their lives are substantially better for the experience. That is undeniable.
