Just a reminder about the "Clean Eating, Whole Foods" forum--

Whether you're at goal or just starting out, you've made a decision to change your lifestyle for the better.  This includes eating a healthier diet than what you did pre-op.  If you want to take that decision even further and learn how to incorporate nutritionally dense foods into your food choices, eliminate additives and preservatives from your diet, and even grow your own foods, come check out this forum. 

It is open to anyone.  Some are vegetarians and some eat meat, some are new to this whole concept and some have been doing this for years.  Come share your experience and/or learn from others!

Interesting findings.  Just one clarification-- this is from a web conference that ONE surgeon in Austrailia presented (as you said, this info was based on his presentation from March 2008).  This was not the "official" International Consensus Summit for Sleeve Gastrectomy results (your PP slides might be a little misleading if folks don't read the details).

What I find interesting about this is that the overall OFFICIAL findings from that first Summit were very encouraging.  It will be interesting to see what happens at the official summit in May!

The laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) is being performed for super-obese and high-risk patients, but its indications have been increasing. A second-stage bariatric operation may be performed if necessary, with increased safety. Long-term results of LSG and further networking are anxiously awaited.

You might consider looking into VSG also.  There is a Message Board for them here at OH (http://www.obesityhelp.com/forums/VSG/)  The Band is a good choice, but do your research.  I think its definatly better than RnY. ~Rana

The ONLY way to know is to call the ins. and ask.  I was told that you can have 5 people who have Blue Cross PPO of Calif. and have 5 different coverages.  Mine stipulated that the surgery must be done at a Center of Excellence by a Prefered Provider.  Others have had policies that say they can go to any Dr./Hosp. and still other aren't even covered at all.  Gotta call and ask.

Have you looked into VSG (vertical sleeve Gastrectomy).  There is a forum on OH that you could check out and ask questions.  If you are a self-pay anyway, the VSG typically isn't much more expensive.  Oh, and you don't end up with the malabsorbsion problem like with RNY.  It might be worth considering-- but get more info first. With RNY, the 5 yr data shows they maintain a weight loss of 55% (compared to the 50% with Lap-Band).  Either way, you will have to make some major, life-long changes in your eating habits. If you have a BP machine at home, take your BP twice a day and document it!  When you are home and relaxed, your BP might be lower.  If so, you can then show that the elevated BP is due to the stress of having it taken at the office (you know, the worry that it will be high, etc.).  Think calming thoughts as you take it each time. My hubby's Dr. got all over him about his high BP, so hubby bought one of those machines so he could carefully monitor things.  He noticed that his reading were considerably lower than what happened in the office.  He wrote everything down and took it to his Dr. and his Dr. then agreed that hubby should not be on meds, because he had "white coat syndromn".  Maybe it could work for you, too! I just can't believe Hollywood's perspective on body image!!! Have you seen the weight loss commericals lately?  In the "before" pictures they look healthy, even in a bikini.  In the "after" photos, they look sickly thin.  My 11 yr old dd is the one who pointed this out to me. How sick is this country getting about weight?!?!  It seems like we are going to one extreme or the other-- too heavy or WAAAAY too thin.  What ever happened to balance and health??? BTW, one of the things I really like about this forum and the Lap-Band is that healthy balance.  I've lurked on some of the other boards and I've seen too many folks try to get to the low end of their ideal weight or less.  I for one am tired of this mentality of extremes, or "if some is good then more must be better". Have you called BC and asked them?  In Calif., they are one of the better ins. to have for WLS.  BUT, it partly depends on your policy.  Some folks here with BC can go to any Participating Dr., but not with mine.  I must have a Participating Dr., PLUS have it done at a Center Of Excellence (which means that I must drive 3 hrs to have this procedure done). Hi Bridget! I hear that the Kaiser process is difficult, depending on your cir****tances.  The big "hurdle" is that the usually make you lose 10% of your body weight prior to surgery.  I've heard LOTS of complaints about that.  Btw, I don't have Kaiser, but I am familiar with them since I had that coverage for most of my life (I was born at a Kaiser hospital and so were all of my kids-- all in No. Calif.).  I also know someone who is currently going through this process with Kaiser. Anway, Pm = Private Message.  If you click on a person's avitar/picture, it takes you to their profile where you can click on "send a message".  This is not to be confused with PBing = productive burp, a problem that can happen if you eat to fast or take too big of bites. I agree with avoiding buffets, but I know that if you are with other folks then sometimes it can't be avoided.  Plus I've found that sometimes even at "regular" restaraunts, the plate size is HUGE.  Go in with the mind set that you are making a MUCH BIGGER waste of food if you eat beyond your hunger/soft stop/etc.  What's the difference whether you eat the food or not?  Getting your money's worth has to be about the quality of what you eat, not the quantity. I just got back from Reno, where we ate at both a regular restaurant and the buffet.  I was amazed that I was able to eat at a $20 buffet and eat only one plate of food.  AVOID THE DESSERT AREAS!!!! Thank you all so much for the feedback and understanding.  I noticed that this problem has definately gotten worse with weight gain.  Or maybe its age.  And I'm sure that having 3 kids hasn't helped.  I've tried Kegal exercises, but it hasn't helped much. As far as having it documented, I guess it will maybe help with getting approved but showing that I am indeed having other problems related to my weight.  What a pain though! This would be EXCELLENT!!!!  Run with it! I have seen at another forum where one of the members put together a FAQ web site pieced together from posts/questions that pop up regularly on their forum.  There are a number of free web services out there, if someone were interesting in putting this together-- hint, hint. I did something like this a couple of years back in regards to Hermit Crabs (hey, there's actually a whole lot to know about those little critters if you want them to survive!)  Yahoo had a free service for web hosting, but I don' t know if they do that anymore.  Might be worth a looksie. Hello all, (TMI alert!!!) I am having a rather personal problem: stress incontinence.  I have an awful respiratory virus and a HORRIBLE cough (yes, I'm drinking a LOT of water, but that is adding to my problem).  This is causing a very embarrassing problem with incontinence.  I have to wear a maxi pad, just in case!  I know that weight is a factor, and have had my GYN Dr. document this problem in my chart, but it was very mild at the time.  In the mean time, my ins. changed and she is not a "preferred Dr".  I don't have a GYN right now. My question is this: is this something that I can get better documented by my PCP?  As embarrassing as this is, I am hoping that it helps my case for WLS.  Is the PCP the right Dr. for this, and if not, then who?
