New, nervous, and ready to begin
My name is Sara, I'm 23, and I want to get the Lap-Band. I have been trying to find out as much as I can about WLS, and I feel sure that getting the Lap-Band is the right route for me.
But I am actually really scared about it, and don't know where to begin. I am going to a seminar as soon as I can, but other than that, I don't know what to do. My family is not supportive of my decision, so I feel it's something I have to do on my own (though my boyfriend is supportive of whatever I choose). What do I do? Do I go see my doctor? What if she doesn't support my decision? How do I approach my insurance company? I have CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield. Does anyone here have experience getting approval (or disapproval) from them? And what the heck is dumping, anyway!?
Any help or advice you can give would be very helpful.
Thanks, Sara
Aime
The love of my OH Family has me humbled!!!!
Comparison is the thief of joy!
If we spend our time comparing our life/weight loss/body to others, we totally miss what WE have accomplished. Keep in mind how far you have come and what you can do now that you couldn't do weeks/months/years ago. I hate the expression " It's all good", but in this case it fits! Wherever you are in your journey ... It's ALL good!!!

Hi Sara - Actually, you've already taken the first, hardest step in a long line of steps, and that is the decision to have the surgery. What kind depends on a variety of factors - how much you need to lose, your comorbidities, etc. It's okay to be scared about it, it's a major lifestyle change, but one that I absolutely would do again in a heartbeat.
Everyone has given you great advice already, so I'll just add that you should feel free to come here anytime with any questions or concerns that you have. We're always happy and willing to share. Welcome to the MD Board! Teresa (Tia)
Mark - HMO's don't cover WLS anymore??? Wow! I'm glad I had my surgery when I did - I have Blue Choice, got immediate approval, and the only $$ I ever paid out was my co-pays for some of the tests, all in all, less than $175 total!!! I would think it would be just the opposite, that more are paying as opposed to less!! YIKES!!

I am who I am and accept my feelings wholeheartedly.
