you will find that your family will change their eating habbits with you. for example, my family used to eat a TON of fried foods, sweets, etc. now with my surgery, everyone looks at the carbs, sugar, and sodium content (even my 10yr old!) your surgery is a great life changing event for everyone, so dont sweat it  :)

I also highly recommend Dr. Kligman and his staff.  Dr. Kligman is strict but I find him to have a wonderful bedside manner and a good sense of humor.   I saw another surgeon before I saw Dr. Kligman and I am so glad I did shop around.  Nicole and Mary B. (the nutrionist)  are super.  They really care about you.

Hope this helps.

You will need to follow your post-op diet the first few weeks which will probably not include a meal for everyone else.  Once you are cleared and move on from soft foods, then everyone can enjoy the same.  A protein and a veggie is a great way to start.  Leave out the carbs and everyone will benefit.

I am awaiting a surgery date and have been wondering how and what I'm going to cook for my family after surgery.  Do you make a meal for yourself and something different for everyone else? Or do you all eat the same thing (only much less)? I also have 2 small children one of whom is very picky so I know he will not eat certain things.  TIA!!

Hi there,

I am so glad that you are trying hard to get yourself prepared for when you are ready for your surgery. It is very important to even learn how to eat  and drink slowly too.  It will help you after surgery.  Worse feeling is getting your food stuck cause you ate too fast.  You can also drink too fast and go through major pain in your chest.

Ok so as far as getting foods that will help you.  I will not recommend lean cuisine, smart ones and all those frozen dinners.  The reason why is because they are full of sodium and that will not help you to lose weight.  Also they have hidden calories and fat that they do not disclose.  I saw that in the news before.

So easiest stuff with protein.   Tuna fish in water, salmon, chicken in can. Lettuce, tomatoes, carrots, cheese, protein bars that are low in sugar.  If you buy a protein bar and it tastes great chances are it is full of carbs and sugar.  So it is important to always check the carbs, sugar and protein. The chicken in the can is easy to make chicken salad and cut up lettuce and tomato add cheddar cheese to your salads, boil eggs you can add those to your salads.  Make chili in your crock pot and freeze it in separate containers. When you are on the go just thaw and heat.

As far as protein drinks you can buy on the go ready made protein drinks. When you feel that you are getting hungry have some protein.  That will help with feeling full.  You can also buy the whey protein powder from Walmart called body fortress and mix that with a cup of milk that will give you 33 grams of protein.

You can also make bean soups in the crock pot. They freeze good as well.  There is so much you can do.  I will think of more things and message you.  When you feel like snacking eat a fresh crunchy fruit, snack on carrots, celery, peanut butter on whole wheat and jelly or have beef jerky (high in protein)

If you need anything please do not hesitate to contact me.  [email protected]  my email address.

Take care,

Cira

I am who I am and accept my feelings wholeheartedly.
