Bob,
I know you have already received some good pros and cons here. However, I thought I would share with you my experience. I wanted to start biking several years ago and purchased a department store special that was cheap and my riding experience lasted about one trip around the block. It seemed like more work than it was worth. Then three years ago I purchased a bike that sounds like the Haro you are describing and biking was more enjoyable and became something that I have gotten into and really enjoy. I have watched a couple of my friends that I ride with experience the same thing. A hybrid is a good choice when you do not know what type of terrain you might be riding on next as you travel.

I love my Specialized mountain bike. I had it upgrade to heavy duty cranks and bigger stronger pedals to hold my big ass also put a big ass couch seats on it, easy on the ass. Bought it a few years ago from a local shop for around 400 has held up well and is still going strong. I di take it in every other year for a full "tune up"
a garage sale might be a good idea, get it on the cheap figure out what you like or don't about it then buy exactly what you're looking for, once you figure out what that is. then resell the older bike for what you bought it for.
It might be a matter of your choice , and wich riding position you prefer .
The road bike will have you layed over more ,and harder on the tant !
the mountain bike has more of an upright position and therefore a little easer on the ol tant . It will take a little getting used to .
I think you should try riding a few types of bikes and make your chioce from that .
Some people like the more reclined position , like the road bike . I found it
a little tough to get used to at first . After you lose more weight it gets easer to take .I have both types of bike . Sometimes a ride my road bike to work, and sometimes I ride my mountain bike .
A good road bike will cost you more though !
I would say ( In my opinion ) start with a mountain bike , its a little *****eaper and easer on the body. ( at first )
Then if you really like riding , you can think about getting into a road bike.
I would ( personally ) stay away from the hybrid , they are for old farts LOL . No just kidding .
You can get smooth tires for your mountain bike to make the ride a little smoother and roll easer. Then you can put some liners in the tires , this will help with flats and thorn punctures . I have some in all of my bikes .
( NO FLATS ) Thats importain when you work swing shift like me . I ride
home at 3:00 am , sure don't want a flat at that time of night . I dont like that stuff called slime it works but its heavy .The liners I have in my tires
have been great ,there light weight and I havent had a flat yet .
Go to your bike shop and ask them , see what they say.
Then ask them about pedals . Thats another topic of discussion altogether .
There are a few different types to choose from .
I would start with just regular old style pedals ( platform Pedals )
Then work up to clipless type. I use SPD clips . Ask the people at the bike shop to show you all of the different types .
I hope this helps a little
Best wishes
Nick
