Want to become a member of the Tour de Fat cycling club?
As some of you know, the Tour de Fat is the phrase I coined to describe my personal WLS journey. I felt it was an appropriate title given my interest in cycling and the health benefits and sheer joy I’ve experienced from the sport. So, as a way to add an element of inspiration (hopefully) and fun (hopefully) to the locker room, I feel it’s time to open up membership into the Tour de Fat cycling club.
A year ago, I found a pair of Tour de Fat cycling socks at a cycling event thus was born the title of my WLS journey. My Tour de Fat socks have become one of my most prized cycling possessions. So prized in fact, I only wear them when I ride in a big cycling event like yesterday’s Elephant Rock cycling festival. My Tour de Fat socks serve as a reminder of where I came from vs. where I am today health-wise.
How do you become a member of Tour de Fat? To quote John Belushi in Animal House, “it don't cost nothin'.” There is a requirement for entrance into this rather exclusive club though and that being a commitment to further the cause of cycling as a means for WLS men to get healthy. Specifically, here are the requirements:
- Be a former, or soon to be former, WLS “fat man.”
- Be a regular poster to the locker room.
- Own and regularly ride a bicycle as an integral part of your post-WLS exercise program.
- Spread the word here in the locker room and elsewhere. For example, when I get asked how I lost my weight, I always say three things: First, I had WLS, next I radically changed my eating habits and last but not least, I become a cycling fanatic.
For you efforts and successful induction into Tour de Fat, you will receive at no cost to you:
1. A new pair of exclusive, slightly irregular XL Tour de Fat cycling socks.
2. A suitable for framing, Tour de Fat cycling certificate.
3. Some worthless cycling swag I pick up at various cycling events (e.g. sunscreen, lip balm, maybe a water bottle, etc.)
You need not apply to become a member of Tour de Fat. I’ll just read about your cycling-related endeavors here on the board.
With that, I am pleased to announce the newest inductees into the Tour de Fat cycling club. They are:
Nick from
Bob from Tennessee (aka RockyTop): Although just a recent WLS graduate, this post about RockyTop and his newly found commitment to cycling speaks volumes – “His wife bought him a bicycle to help him get exercise while at home, but he also takes it with him in his truck trailer. Then he finds a shopping center or a large parking lot, takes the bike out, and puts in a couple of miles on it!”
Bob from Alabama (aka Bama): Also a recent WLS graduate, Bama gets inducted into Tour de Fat for his George Jetson-like response (“Jane, help me get off this crazy thing!”) after he first started riding his new bike he purchased shortly after WLS. Here’s the post: “I can attest to one thing - riding a bike was a heck of a lot easier when I was 10 than it is now!! Not to mention not nearly as complicated considering the maximun gears was 3. Now it's a 21-speed Schimano derailleur twist grip with 3 front gears and 7 rear gears to make riding "easier". Say what??? Hell, I ain't figured out what gear to use to get out of the driveway yet!!!”

Congratulations gentlemen! Should you decide to accept your induction into the Tour de Fat, pm me your address so I can send off your goods. Boner

I hopped in the car and motored down there.
The bike looks great, and to my surprise, it was 1 year newer than what I had ordered.
I had ordered the 06 model because of the great price. Well I got the 07 model which is a nicer looking (I like the color scheme better on this bike than the 06 bike) and this bike has the carbon fiber front forks instead of being all aluminum.
It took quite a while to get here, so I was thinking that they must have run out of the 06 special and shipped me the 07 instead.
Either way I'm stoked. This is the first bike I have owned since I was a kid.

All my pleasure, Bama! Your Tour de Fat socks, certificate and some worthless biking swag are on their way to Alabammy. I know I don't need to remind you of this but don't overdue your riding down there in the Bammy heat this summer. Then again, you could get up at 4AM or so and beat the heat.
