Yeah  why is diesel more than regular gasoline?        It used to always be cheaper .    I guess that's sorta like why does the cost of synthetic oil go up as the price of regular dino juice does same?

you actually believe that bull crap about the price going up because of china's and indias new demand for oil?  It's hogwash (at least for the most part).  It's another scare tactic used by the oil companies to line their pockets.  If you listen to the news almost every single day there is a new "threat" to our oil supply.  Venezula is going to refuse to ship to us, there is fighting in chad, blah blah blah blah blah.  It's bull crap, manipulation through fear.  Green technology is great, but make it affordable to the average person. I don't know anyone that is going to spend 30 k on a skateboard size car that  gets only slightly better gas mileage then a regular car of similiar size. Scott

Well, I do not believe that the price is going up because of China and India's demand. I believe China and India's demand is going to increase exponentially over the next decade or two, which is just one of the reasons why we need to reduce or eliminate our dependence on foreign energy. Same thing with Chavez, or other whack jobs. I do not want us to be vulnerable to political instability. Trust me, I am no fan of Exxon/Mobile either, but I own their stock. Our government allowing them to merge a few years ago was all the proof I needed that our government was in their pocket. No other industry would have been allowed to merge like that. If Verizon and AT&T tried to get together right now, they would be dragged through the streets of Washington. You don't have to spend 30K for a great fuel efficient car. Personally, I think Hybrids are a bad investment due to the initial capital expenditure. You can buy a brand new civic, which is plenty comfortable, for about half that, and get 35MPG. 5 star crash tested, too. Build in America, by UAW workers no less. The only way green technology becomes affordable is for it to be economically viable. At $4-5 a gal, it is. Like any technology, the costs will drop significantly once established in the market, just like computers and cell phone service. Control through fear? You are dead on with that one. It is exactly what our government, media and big business want, and they are getting it. If every person in the country used just 10 gallons of gas less per month, we would be swimming in the **** and the price would fall at least 1.50/gal within a few months. Long term, I do not want to be vulnerable to anyone, or anything, for our energy independence. That is my point, period. Make oil economically non-viable, and the middle east and idiots like Chavez become irrelevant. Nothing would make me happier. JP

Sold my guzzler and purchased a used 97 geo metro with 40k on it. Its kind of an embarrassment to drive a wind up little tinker toy like that, but the thing will literally pay for itself in saved gas in a couple years. The thing is crazy cheap to fix too.

I'm throwing in 2 more cents...Most people in the South and the West need to have solar panels on their roofs.  The solar panels should be built in the rust belt (OH,MI, PA areas).  The workers may not get UAW wages, but make them competitive.  There needs to be some major tax credits to get this done.  The people with the panels should be selling the unused energy back to the utilities.  Expand electric cars big time (also with tax incentives).  We need more natural gas vehicles on the road (with fill up service stations subsidized by the federal goverment).  Increase mass transit and keep the bus and rail stations save for the average person to use (armed guards if necessary).  These last two won't be popular, but here goes...Drill in Alaska and off the coast of Santa Barbara.  And lastly, have the goverment create 3-4 new refineries.  Have them goverment owned and run (yes we all know how the goverment mismanages business).  You put these refineries on old military bases along the coasts; one in CA, one on the east coast, one is TX or LA or MS, and one next to the great lakes.  As prices rise they can increase production to help them fall.  Teddy Rosevelt (sp) (a Republican president) busted up the oil companies and the people loved him for it.  It's time for a statesman to step forward and do the right thing...Before it's too late.  Brian

I commute to San Jose from Modesto. I went from driving 80-85 MPH to 55 MPH. I have a F250 4x4 diesel that's parked. I only start it once a week to keep her alive. My commuter car is a 97 plymouth breeze and I get 32MPG going 55.  So right now I'm driving the breeze. Currently I'm looking for a job close to home.

I started noticing gas prices increasing when Katrina hit (I thought that was bad).  When that happened, I bought a motorcycle (500cc. Kawasaki).  I use it to travel to work.  I go about 30 miles round trip.  I'm unable to drive with my wife because she's a nurse and has different work hours.  I figured at $3 a gal, that I would save over $150 a month in gas (I haven't even calculated at $4 + yet).  That was enough for the payments on the bike plus insurance, and still have a little left over.  I put over 12K miles on it the first year.  Down here in SC, I was even able to ride it at least once a week even in the winter!  I'm starting to see more bikes on the commute route nowdays.  Every little bit helps.  I'm currently getting about 47 mpg (not bad for a little bike with a fat man on board).

This new high cost will open new doors that remained closed. It will become efficient to do research to find alternatives. I read somewhere that one of the countries of South America has totally become self-sufficient from fossil fuels and made changes 20 years ago to achieve that goal. Now they are reaping the benefits. America is the land of adapability and I suspect that we can solve this problem. If we put our best thinkers on this, it will ease the burden and solve it eventually. For now, I guess we just have to bite the bullet and take it.
