Met 1st mini goal..
Hello all...I had to lose 35 lb(50 lb reqd for surgery) to meet with my surgeon for a second time to review my tests and get my surgery date....as of last night I am down 37.5 lbs since 6-13 being on Optifast.
I just made my appointment to meet with Dr. Sax on 8/15...I am probably looking at mid Sept for surgery. The way I see it...I will be on Optifast till surgery...it will benefit me to lose as much weight as I can prior to surgery to help the Dr out and help me exercise more now! It is finally in my sights now!

Congrats on the loss! I cant wait to see what i have lost preparing for my surgery (8/6/08). I have an appointment with my PCP next friday, so i will get an official weight then and at my pre-op on 7/31. Just hoping my PCP doesn't add any new meds this time, last few she has added something to my list every time! Can't wait to start the big loss and get rid of some of these bottles cluttering up my medicine cabinet!

That's great news. A protein-sparing modified fast like Optifast is probably the fastest way to lose weight in the short term without having WLS. I was on Optifast 20 years ago (yeah, it's been around THAT long), and managed to lose 60 pounds in 3-4 months (in fact, I got down to what I weigh right now, and managed to stay there for about a millisecond! ) The combination of Optifast pre-op followed by RNY should be very effective AND long-lasting.
It's hard to make predictions about any one person's post-op progress, but my sense is that if you lose a lot of weight pre-op, you might not experience the same massive, massive weight drop in the weeks immediately post-surgery, simply because you've already taken care of depleting all your excess glycogen and its attendan****er weight. But that also means that all the weight you do lose post-op will be "real" fat lost.

Steve,
I think you are right. I lost 45 pounds over 1 month on Medifast (I am assuming this is very similar in formulation to the Opitfast) It took me about 2 months to match this weight loss after my surgery. I think it has to do with glycogen depletion and the body becoming acclimated to having a lower caloric intake.

I'm kinda glad my doctor didn't give me a weight loss target before he'd do surgery. I was in such a "give up" frame of mind back then that I'd probably have said "effit" and I'd still be 450. Sounds like you're doin' a hell of a job though and have a great attitude about it. Congratulations on your success so far and keep us posted.
