When are you getting your surgery?

Well I wasn't going to take a gamble that I'd be super obese by the time I was 50 so I had weight loss surgery at 21 years old. And I've lost 103lbs so far and it's been great. But anyway, congrats and we hope you lose that extra person! Welcome also, sorry I'm the scatter-brained one.

Hello to everyone -- thank you for the warm welcome.

Lance, I guess we all get into this situation differently.  Mine was a slow, lifelong weight gain.  I still have my driver's license from when I was 19.  I was 6'3" (and still am), but only weighed 165 pounds, and I wasn't making that up.  It took me nearly 30 years to get to 300 pounds, but when I was in my late 40s the weight gain really started accelerating as the complications piled up.

I think you are smart not to waste decades being fat.  Hope it all goes well for you.

I had my surgery four days ago.  Unlike most of you guys, though, I'm a lap-bander.  I sure pray this works out!

Welcome!!!

There is a great group of guys here, when you need support they will be here for you.  If you are having a tough time they will offer suggestions.  Any and all questions are answered here, sex, nutrition or exercise there is someone with information that will help.  When you are not following doctor's orders and eat the wrong food, you will kicked in the ass and told to shape up (done with brotherly love at all times).

May you have a wonderful weight loss journey, hold on tight.

Rick,

Hi and glad you found the place. I also had the band in Dec. 06. You and I have a lot in common except unlike you I waited until I  was  in my 50's to get the band and at this point bith my knees are shot.
My weight loss has been a little slow because with my bad knees I have a tough time exercising.  I'm down 108 lbs but still want to lose another 60 to 70.
Reading your story it mirrors mine except I don'****ch college football, there is only 1 true sport and that is professional wrestling! (LOL).
My weight got up to 388 and I'm 6' 2''. I have the GERD and the hypertension and the OSA (real bad in the knees, no cartilage left bone on bone in both knees!) I also have type 2 Diabetes and peripheral neuropathy (Diabectic nerve damage in both feet) and because of the bad knees the Dr's told me I was walking weird and herniated 3 disc's in my lower back.
So you see you nipped it in the bud at the right time. Since losing the weight I stopped taking 2 insulin shots per day and all my blood work (from last week) came back great. BP was normal, cholesteral normal, triglycerides normal. I am still takin some med's for these things, but they were never under control like this.
Unfortunately some things once the damage is done it can't be reversed like the nerve damage and the loss of cartilage  so I wish I had done this sooner like you.
Well, welcome and best of luck to you and send a message if you have any questions.

Wow, Dan, what a story.  Are you looking into buying new knees?

Actually, I AM in my 50s -- I just turned 52.  My doc told me last year that I am "pre-diabetic" and my knees hurt, so I was probably only a few years behind you.

Thanks for the kind greetings, everyone.  I write a lot, so you will probably tire of seeing my name.

Someone asked about learning more about me.  I'm still not telling folks about my surgery -- just my boss, wife, and kids so far.  When I get a little more comfortable I'm sure I'll spill more personal stuff.

Take care,

Rick
