Vitamins??
Hey gang. I was wandering about on the R&R board and there was a post about Flintstone vitamins not being the best for us RNY'ers. What is the truth about vitamins? Dx, Foo? I need something that's not going to get me in trouble later on and if I can stop taking these nasty ass Flintstone ones then I'd love it. Thanks.
I take one Flintstone type in the morning and a good quality generic in the afternoon...Just in case. Just because someone is the loudest may not mean they are correct (R & R). If your six month labs are ok then stay the course. Also make sure nothing is on the low side of normal...could be a warning sign that an area will be getting worse. Brian
Hey Lance...
Just saw this.
According to the ASBS Article-
Bariatric Nutrition: Suggestions for the Surgical Weight Loss Patient,
Their only recommendation in regards to Children's Vitamins is-
"Avoid children’s formulas that are incomplete."
Many do not contain magnesium, selenium, and other micronutrients that one would find in an Adult's "Complete" Multi-Vitamin.
For the ASBS's recommendations, check out the full story at-

I don't know why Flinstones get such a bad rap. Sure, they're not a good source of iron, calcium and B12, all of which need to come from other supplements, but there's nothing particularly notable about them otherwise; they're just a basic multivit.
Personally, I take two Centrum Chewable each day. Why Chewable? Because I started on them post-op, and I still like 'em. Otherwise, I'd go with a Centrum non-chewable as my basic multivitamin+mineral. Most drug store chains have their own "house-brand" multivitamins which are clones of the Centrum formulation, and are much cheaper.

Lance I take Flintstones since the beginning. My Nut and Doc both recomended them. My 3 month labs were perfect. Along with the Flintstones I take B1, B12, and Biotin and I don't take Calcuim with my flintstones due to the Iron in the Flintstones. My doc tells me all of there patients that take the Filntstones are doing fine.
The problem is not short term because short term your is still hanging on and using up resources but rather long term. For long term you need a better vitamin source, I would eventually move to something like one a day or centrum but always keep checking your labs to be sure. Remember B12 and other B vites should be sub lingual or liquid. I use dots under the tongue. If you're anemic Iron supplements. It can catch up to you pretty fast.
