OT: Bicycle Seats

Since there has been some discussion of bicycling and buying bicycles and bicyles seats here recently, I asked my brother, the pedaling prof, for sites for you to look for the seats.  He started his trip across the USA on a narrow seat that did have a narrow slot in in to allow for air flow in his more sensitive areas, but it became a major pain in the butt within only 1,000 miles of the ride.  He was already using 2 different brands of butt baum ( who even knew they made this stuff?) as well as anti-biotics and other creams.  He finally changed seats and started using "The Seat" which is available from www.thecomfortseat.com .  He had no more problems for the next 2,800 miles of his ride with hit butt.  He got some ribbing from the other riders, but they were soon trying to get old fogey seats like his.  The other site that he recommends is www.bicycleseats.org .  Note thate it is a dot org.  Even if you don't buy from them, the Learn More section can be quite helpful.

I had asked about the site where he purchased his bike online, but apparently there's been a change in their web addr.  I'll try to get new info.

Also, if you followed his blog until his ride ended on July, 22, I just want to let you know that he wrote a summation of the overall trip on Aug 22.  It gives a decent idea of what to expect if you do want to think about taking that trip.  Bob

His blog addr is http://pedalingprof.blogspot.com/ .  One thing he didn't mention in his blog is that he went to visit his youner son later in Aug while his son was working at a drama camp.  My bro brought his bike and said he was out on a nice ride on a country road when he saw a bear cub walk by.  He was glad to see a car going by and he shadowed the car for a while since he knew that the cub's mother had to be nearby.  And, bears can run at about 30 mph.  Bob

You have to be careful with these, guys ..  REAL careful ..

I remember a few years ago there was a big scrare flap over bicycles seats causing permanent nerve damage to the package (= impotency) ...  This was caused by the seat pressing for long continuous periods of time against the prostate gland area, or some such (anyone else remember that?)

Ya, the "numb-nuts"  was indeed an issue in certain cases, like when you're ridin' your frickin' bike 10 hours a day for 30 consecutive days. Even then, the numbness was temporary. Could be an issue for ultramarathon cyclists, but I'm thinkin' not too many of us here on the board have to worry about "numb-nuts" from too much ass time on the bike.

Batswingsman, if you would just look at the two web sites I provided for bicycle seats, you would see that these are seats that are specifically designed to protect the riders.  When I asked my brother for info on bicycle seats, I told him that I wanted to post the info to the WLS support site.  You'll notice that the bicycle seats shown on these sites do not include the typical racing seat that might cause "injury" to a man.

Also, I did note that my Bro, Tom, did ride for 2,800 miles on his seat.  Yes, in order to get it done ( the whole ride was 3,800 miles) they often did centuries, i.e., days where they would ride 100 miles per day.  Luckily, they didn't start doing them until they were east of the Rockies.  I think they had one week in the middle of the ride where they did centuries for 4 days in a row.  Luckily, the fifth day was a rest day.  He did stay in motels every night.  He didn't suffer any permanent damage.  As a matter of fact, he didn't have any injuries of any kind.  He rested a couple days following his cross country ride and then went about having his usual 25-35 mile per day rides.  He normally rides 8,000 to 10,000 miles per year and uses various trainers in the winter.  By the way, he really hates standard exercise bikes.  Bob
