OK Guy's I'd like to challenge each and everyone to journal your distance.

This is not a competition against each other, but a internal challenge. No matter what end of the exercise scale you find yourself.

As the season begins to change (some parts of the country sooner then others) and the Holidays are fast approaching lets motivate each other with our exercise.

We will still post IDGOMB for day to day efforts but a couple times a month will encourage you to post your month long statistics.

The first week of October will ask for your September effort. Good Luck and I hope you all participate!

Nice challenge RockyTop. A good monthly goal for most WLS newbies is 50 miles a month walking so a little less than a couple miles a day for starters. Once we find an exercise passion, "Katie bar the door" as far as miles, speed, etc.

It's cool to see many of newbie walkers migrate to more strenuous activities whether it be running, biking, triathalons, weight lifting or hiking. The exercise forum here on OH is full of men and women who have made this migration. Don't see any over there who have regained weight post-WLS. Great testament to the power of exercise quite frankly.  One thing for sure, those that find some level of passion for exercise are best able to keep the weight off over the long haul.

Consider this challenge as the "on ramp" for long term weight maintenance cause when the appetite returns, we need to have a way to burn off the excess calories.

My goal for Sept. is 500 miles cycling and 20 miles walking. Got a good start with 157 miles month to date.

Thanks

Cool challenge Bobby boy!!  Great way to try to motivate and keep each other accountable for exercising.  I'm game!!  I'll use my mileage on the treadmill and what little bike riding I can get in.

Too dang bad I can't count the miles put in while on the saddle of my Venture motorcycle - heck, I can't even count twisting the throttle as wrist exercise cause I use the cruise control!
BwaHahahahaha!!!!

You already know how terribly out of shape I am.  I'm just beginning to count steps per day, but I think I've finally set up my Trike the way I want it.  I had to go back to a machinist to get the bike seat stem cut again.  I took the pedals off today  and I put the high rise handlebars on late last week.  It's now comfortable.   I hope to soon be using the sidewalk because my front porch is just too short for comfort, i.e., I take 20 steps and then need 20 small steps to execute a K-turn to go back in the other direction.  It would be nice to be able to go longer distances between turns.  My street is on a slight incline, but I think I will be able to start going from my driveway along the width of my yard and then turn around in my neighbor's driveway.  I would be worth it even if I have to walk the Trike up and down my driveway.  I do have a small indoor portable gym that uses resistance bands but I just can't get motivated to use it.  It's basically a clothes hangar now.  Bob

Bob I don't think you fully understand what a inspiration you are. With your limited capabilities your effort is awesome!

In just the last couple of months I've seen a new dedication to your health. The effort to get your Bike and modified to your needs was a challenge enough, but you kept pursuing it.

You never know how many WLS brothers you touch that probably thought I can do it, until they see your effort!

Darn Good Job Bob!

To those men both pre-op and post-op who are having difficulty finding suitable exercise, I do recommend the site where I got my Large Trike at http://kaz-usa.com/Trike.html .  They sell 3 adult tricycles that support 750 lbs each and scooters that support 500 lbs.  For those who are thinking about a scooter but aren't sure they can balance properly on it please note that one of the scooters features dual wheels at the rear and all of the scooters have brakes.  The Trikes do not have brakes.

I figured out a way to modify a seat to suit my needs (due to severe lymphedema on my right leg I have difficulty straddling most bikes).  Along with the cost of having my seat stem cut and ordering high rise handlebars (which come standard on the Super Large Trike) my total out of pocket costs were about $425.  That's really hard to match.  I do highly recommend the various Trikes for anyone with knee, back, or hip problems.  Even though you may be able to ride the Low Rider, I'd suggest staying away from it.  It's just too close to the ground to be comfortable for most of us.  Bob

DOUBLE DITTO that Bob! jbob, you could just say it's too hard to exercise, or I can't exercise, or whatever excuse you want to use, and no one would say anything. But, instead of being a quitter and a whiner, you are TRYING and FIGHTING!! That takes courage, guts and determination and is an inspiration to anyone who looks at your situation, my friend!!  Your efforts makes some excuses I hear from others seem pitiful and trivial. KEEP ON KEEPIN' ON BROTHER!!
