what do you eat

So to go along with the snacking post
How much do you eat daily, do you go by volume or weight, or calories?
Based on your choice above, What is your daily calorie intake, volume or weight of food.

I never have a problem getting enough protein, so I don't even use that as my guideline any longer.  When I look at my chart on the daily plate I'm alway way over my goal for protein.  It's easy to do when what you eat is protein based foods.  So for me I am counting calories most of the time, and that is pretty easy too now that I have been doing it for a while.  I know what the day is going to look like because I have had (2 egg beaters, laughing cow cheese, roastbeef omelete enough times to know what the nut info is)

For me the toughest thing is grazing & snacking.

I have followed this rule lately

I don't count calories

Protein first 3-4 shakes a day plus meat. I actually malabsorb still so I need to supplement
Vitamins Zinc multivitamin and soft iron 2 each in the am
B12 I do 10 a day under the tongue right now lil dots
Good carbs veggies etc
water - 100 oz plus the amt in shakes
fruits
treats sf ice cream stuff like that. I add it to shakes

One thing I have found is doing a shake curbs the urge to graze

Until you are done losing you should stay less than 1200 cal a day.  I don't, nor ever have counted calories.  I concentrate on getting in all my protien, then fiber.  The fiber/protien ballance is what I have to monitor for the rest of my life to keep things working right.  You will begin to hate eating, it becomes a chore.

Daily I eat:

3/4 cup Kashi go lean with lactaid whole milk - breakfast
2 1/2 oz ham and 1 oz swiss on 2 slices whole grain bread or leftover meat  - lunch
cheezit or mixed nuts - snack
5-6 oz meat with a veggie and rice - supper
cheezit or mixed nuts - evening snack
21/2 oz ham & 1 oz cheese on 1 slice whole grain - before bed

I also have 3-4oz of Hershey's Special Dark Chocolate from the freezer per day.

This is pretty much every day for the last 3 years.

Good luck,  Bob

5 weeks post op

Now, I want to mentino something that happened today that worried me.  I have had a very stressful day at work.  That is when I tend to do stress eating.  I was in one tense meeting after another and then at 12:20 (when I usually am finishing my walk) I had just a few minutes to eat before I needed to get ready to lead a 1pm meeting.   I tok out my sushi and yogurt and without thinking at all had it scarfed down in about 5-7 minutes.  I only realized it when I hit that full space about half way through my yogurt.  I was pissed at myself and this is exactly what scares me about myself.  Thank God the tool at least warned me about it.

I weigh my food, maninly to get an idea of the nurtrional information of what I eat.  Most times I eat about what I portion out.  I then log what I eat in my PDA and monitor the calories, protein, carbs, fat, several different vitamins etc.  By logging what I eat, it holds me responsible for my intake.

I'm pretty happy with what I'm eating.  I just wanted to see what everyone else was doing, and how they went about it.

Thanks guys.

I'm trying to transition away from artificial protein sources, to real food. And I am 4 weeks postop. I am monitoring my calories, but paying most attention to my protein intake. Looking at my fitday.com logs since my surgery, here's my averages:

Calories   809
Fat 29.9 269 32 %
Saturated 10.2 91 11 %
Polyunsaturated 3.9 34 4 %
Monounsaturated 4.3 38 5 %
Carbohydrate 52.2 206 24 %
Dietary Fiber 9.1
Protein 91.6 369 44 %
Alcohol 0.0 0 0 %

My goal has been to get 40% of my calories from protein. Doing that, and listening to my tool, then this is all the calories I can get in right now. Too full.

Tonight, two sea scallops and some refried beans. Lunch was a 1/4 cup of chicken salad and a hard-boiled egg. Breakfast was a scrambled egg, a little lof-fat cheddar, wrapped in a Joseph's Lavish bread. And I had a little dry roasted edamame for a midday snack. This all came out to 650 cal and 70g protein.

Let me give a quick plug for sea scallops. We bought a bag of frozen ones at Trader Joe's. They have to be the perfect food. Saute them in a little olive oil in about 4 minutes. Little salt and pepper. And 4 of them (which is more then I can eat) are 100 cal, 1 g of fat, 3 g carbs, and 19 g protein!

I just shoot for a minimum of 70 grams of protein a day, usually broken up into about 5-6 mini meals.

Example:
Breakfast: Protein shot (26 grams protein)
or Myoplex Lite (20 grams protein)

Snack:      Small pack of beef jerky (17 grams protein)

Lunch:        1 cup of beans (14 grams protein)
                 or Myoplex Lite

Snack:       Graham cracker & 1 tbsp peanut butter (8 grams protein)

Dinner:      3-4 oz Grilled chicken or salmon (24 grams protein)
                 1 cup vegetable

Snack:       FF yogurt  (10 grams protein) or Myoplex Lite

Some days I still just don't want solid food and down the protein shakes.

You guys are really doing great with the healthy eating. Grazing and snacking are a real killer when it comes to weight loss and subseqent maintenance. Here's a rule I TRY to live by which helps.....

Never eat anything while watching the BOOB TUBE  or while on the COMPUTER!

It I can do this, this typically eliminates most of my crazing / snacking time.

Great job, guys.
