Why cycling can become a passion for former fat men

Sorry but feeling chatty this morning so this will be my last word on exercise I promise. Anywho, I stumbled upon cycling as a form of post-WLS exercise thanks to my WL surgeon Dr. Schoen.

As I spoke to him after WLS, he mentioned to me that cycling is a great form of exercise for us bigguns' since we've most likely built up amazing leg muscles packing around, in my case, nearly 500 pounds for so many years. He told me my heart was strong and my legs were probably even stronger so give cycling a whirl.

We all know "success breeds success" so as I've become better at cycling, it's become my exercise passion as I strive to do bigger and better things in the sport.

To me, finding an exercise passion is a lot like finding out what ya wanna be when you grow up. Trial and error and a blessing from above.

TBone, I was peeking through your posts a while back from the shadows and ran across your photos...dude....when you say you're a biker, that's like saying Mt Evans is a small hill!!

Way to go bro'  you're making it look easy!

Howdy Nick!  Yeah..I've been a slacker, in MANY ways.  I guess the "how ya' doing"? question is almost self-answering in that I'm back in here crawling around again.

I did really well with my band for the first year, made my goal of dumping off 100 pounds by the anniversary...cleared it by like hours. My problem I think in hindsight was in not setting my SECOND goal!   I did pretty good even after that anniversary...but started not keeping the fill where I needed it, let myself start falling out of all the good tool habits we need to be successful, exercise dropped off to nill, started grabbing "just a bit" to drink with a meal, but I still was pretty much maintaining my weight loss...until.

One night maybe 4-5 months ago I was fixing up some cheeseburgers for the family, these turned out to be some REALLY nice looking burgers...so nice I wondered, "Hmm...I wonder if I can just take one bite".  see, since surgery  bread was a no-no..easiest way to gak!  But that night...that expected pain under the sternum didn't come...wow...so...backsliding begain in earnest then!

Long version of a long story...well, got my head back in gear, started to change back my diet AGAIN, made that over-due appointment for an adjustment...only to find out that I have most likely developed a huge leak in my system somewhere!!  I myself haven't fully bought into that notion, I'm not convinced it's just not the PA was off target somehow, but she pumped in 7.5cc and only drew back out .5cc in less than a 2 minute "leak test".  I hear I'm a champion at leaking!

I have an appointment to meet with my surgeon again next week, they've suggested a plan, I'm suggesting we design some kind of non-surgical test to determine for certain what's going on, or rather, not going on in there. But I guess, I'll be hanging around here a bit more regularly no matter what.  This board and you "old-timers" were a big part of my strength last go, I need it back again for this next 100!!

We're pleased that you are "I'm back in here crawling around again" Padre!

Goals are indeed the basis for weight loss maintenance imo but not necessarily weight loss goals but "what's going to get ya there and keep ya there goals."

X number of calories per day + X minutes/miles/etc. of exercise per day.

Once again, easier said than done I realize, but YOU CAN DO IT, PADRE!!  (in my best Richard Simmons voice.....thanks Lou!!)

Good point, Boneman.

I've wondered about what I call "the Superman Effect" ..   I have wondered if our bones and muscles are built up a bit from, like you say, havingt to get by with so much weight on them for so long ..  Once we lose the weight, it's like "the man on the Moon" bouncing around  ... we should be somewhat "overdeveloped" for our new bods (assuming we don't lose the muscle mass as part of the weight loss process   ) .. So what your doc says seems to fall right in line with that idea ..

I would think it smart that all of us get a thorough check up, including an EKG stress test, before we plunge into hard exercise though ..  Keep in mind too that most of us were pretty inactive as "biguns" for a long time, too, plus suffered with diabetes, sleep apnea, high blood pressure, high blood lipids, etc. etc.  ..  and it could be dangerous to just leap into aerobics ..

I have always said that some day I would like to ride . But at 350 lbs Thats not going to happen now is it ? I  started to ride because I have neuropathy in my feet and even walking can sometimes be very painful .
I was looking for an exercise that is not  high impact on the feet. Some times it  feel like I'm walking on pins and needles or hot coals  !! I already knew I did NOT like running.  ( Did toooo much of it in the Army )
My first bike I started out with  was a  wal-mart special that was hanging from the rafters in my garage.I road it until it was no longer could be riden . Now I have three bikes and as they say , the rest is history .

I thought I would enjoy biking but had no idea I would get so much satisfaction from it on many different levels. The feeling of accomplishment, the visual improvement in myself and the over all good feeling after a ride, not to mention the stress relief. Rocky Top

There is something about the bike that brings me back to being a kid.  That feeling of the wind in your face, the quiet, and the effortless movement.  I love the exercise effect, but I really like the mental effects it has on me.

My wife has been a rider for a long time, and always rode with her friends.  It is now very nice to have another thing we can do together, and I think she also feels some pride in my accomplishments.  I was able to meet her after work yesterday and we rode 12 miles, with a pretty good wind, here in the NE.  It was my longest ride to date and very satisfying.  No, I just have to do the research on a new seat from the post made a few weeks ago.  The only bad effect from the ride was the tarnishing of the Jewels!!!
