I havent lost weight in 20 days. I had my GBS on August 11th. In 2 weeks from surgery I lost 37pds,and none since. I try my best getting in my fluid but still not able to reach 70 ounces. My protein intake is not good, maybe 40 grams a day. My exercise is not much, anywhere from 1/2 mile a day to none since we had hurricane Ike. I work shift work 12 hr shifts, most of the time afterwards is taken up by kids or Im just tired . I called my Docs assistant yesterday and he said stay off the scale and be patient and just continue to do what Ive been doing. Do yall have any suggestions or should I just be patient and quit worrying. October third will be my 2 month check up and Im at 262 and my Doc said I would be down to atleast 249 by then. I also got dehydrated after the 2 weeks and the doc had me start drinking gatorade, seems to me this would not help my situation because of the sugar. Since my protien isnt good,I eat smoked almonds and have no problem with those. Let me know what your thought is on my situation.

I'm in the same boat.  I had my RNY done Aug. 27, lost 20 lbs the first 2 weeks, and nothing the past 6 days.  My doc told me the same thing.  I guess we should just stay off the scale, but it is sooooo hard.

Hey Docmaster,

First, stick with the program of protein first, lots of water and up your exercise but you already knew this. I would bag the gatorade and stick with water for the hydration issue since you're not exercising at a level to require the electrolyte and salt repleshment. Importantly, as you mentioned, gatorade has a ton of sugar and calories.

Doesn't sound like you're drinking protein supplements which will up your protein intake as well as provide more water or use skim milk if it makes it taste better.

Finally, lose the smoked almonds (which have a ton of salt which causes you to retain water weight) and go for raw almonds instead. How do you lose water weight? Drink lots of water (weird I know), protein first, reduce your salt intake, and drink lots of water.

Hang in there and oh' ya, weigh only once a week which is easier said than done I know.

I had surgery two days after you and I have lost 36 lbs total. So we're right there together on the weight loss. My loss has been steady. I didn't start as fast as you, though I haven't stalled more then 3 days.

From what I read, however, a lot of people stall at 2-3 weeks, so I don't think I would worry that much about it.

Plus, you seemed to have answered your question about what to do about it. Increase the water, increase the protein, log your intake at fitday or dailyplate if you're not. Find a good protein shake to make up for those days when you do not get the required amount of protein, and find a way to get moving.

Regarding the exercise, finding a way to make that an important part of your daily schedule is not just important to getting to 249 by next month, it's important to make sure that this is a long-term success story.

Switch from Gatorade to Propel; it's available as a powder to be mixed with water OR as a ready-to-drink beverage.  Same as Gatorade, but only 10 calories.  And if that's too many calories, try Crystal Light.

I would not depend on smoked almonds.  One serving has hundreds of calories (how many are you eating?)  Not that you need to use protein drinks or protein bars, but if you need the convenience, they're available.

Have you discussed your schedule and diet with your doctor's nutritionist?

/Steve

Guys, Boner's exactly right... Do whatever you can to get the protein and water in and stay away from salty and sugary foods/drinks. Also even if it's only short walks, try to get some excercise in. I dont know how old your kids are, but get them to go with you or go to the park. It's hard, but it's important to burn calories.

I was right there with you 2-4 weeks post-op... just need to have faith that it's going to work for you.

You can do it!!!

I lived on yogurt and eggs the first 2 months.

STAY OFF OF THE SCALE !!! I thought only the women were the one's on the scale every day.

You are on track, folow the program and you will be fine.  You will have days when you are heavier than the day before and that will freak you out.  During your first year only step on the scale at the Dr's office and you will be able to stay sane.

Boner and foobear are absolutely correct!  Get the loquids in, and get the protein in, CONSISTENTLY, and it will work!

To put the need for exercise into perspective. I'm 175, below my   docs goal of 195, but by no means underweight. I can exercise an average of two hours a day now and not lose any additional weight . Eventually you'll likely have to exercise just to keep from regaining some of the weight. Now you have that brief window of opportunity where it's easy to lose weight. So it's best to make hay while the sun shines so as not to lose that opportunity.

Good Luck,

Dave
