Yes, it's believed that beta blockers can cause weight gain and/or retard weight loss in at least some people.  This makes a lot of sense, since these agents block many of the metabolic effects of epinephrine (adrenalin), all of which tend to enhance lipolysis and increase energy expenditure.  However, beta blockers don't seem to affect most people this way, or at least their effects are modest.  There are plenty of people who take beta blockers for HBP who lose weight spectacularly after WLS.  Take JFish, for example!

It turns out that I switched from a beta blocker (which had pooped out on me after 10+ years) a month before my RNY.  All I achieved by that switch was to eliminate one possible explanation for my slow post-op weight loss!

It has been said before but 2 things...cut down the carbs (even good carbs like fruit) and a little more exercise.  If he has a sedentary lifestyle it could be a problem.  The weightloss seems like what a woman would lose.  Most women have less muscle mass so they lose it slower.  Men (with more muscle mass) can move more, so the weight comes off faster.  Things like walking during lunch or after dinner can help.  Doing physical projects around the house like cleaning a room or washing and cleaning a car can help with the weightloss.  Just thinking less movement means slower weightloss.  My 2 cents.  Brian

He just moved an entire house by himself-- he's active, just has a sit-down job.

Well I guess since you know it all there is nothing we can do to help. You have just come on here to argue because you have tried to shoot down everything everyone has mentioned.

No. He is extremely compliant. Easy to know this-- he has no money! ;)

tell him to drop the carbs. low carb dieters (in regular people) lose weight much faster then those on higher carb diets.

I'd tell him to increase his protein (a man can get in 1 gram of protein for every lb of ideal body weight, esp if he's working out), and increase his water...that will help fulsh out any toxins from the ketosis. I'd also tell him to reduce his carb intake to less then 20 grams a day for the first 2 weeks, and slowly increase them until he hits his idea carb ratio (you know the point where he starts to slow down his weight loss). Just like atkins, but he has the added benefit of a small pouch so he wont' gorge himself.

If he is weak and dizzy a lot (he is), we were told that dropping his carbs under 30% was ill- advised.

GAH!
