Hey Dave,You are livin' proof that a former fatman can get a "six-pack" if you really, really, really want one. Congratulations on your accomplishment, man! It's taken an extreme amount of effort to get where you are now physically so all I can say is FART!!

You know, my diet hasn't really even been that good recently and I have never done the ab exercises like crunches that superfically develop the six-pack exterior but in terms of full-body exercise I certainly have kept up with that.
Your post about "WLS not being the easy way out" contains a lot about exercise. I started out at 280 with quite a capacity for exercise, which naturally increased tenfold when I lost to 170. I think if people really want WLS to be a lifechanging experience, they need to get to the point where they can perform and more importantly enjoy at least an hour a day of exercise.
Hey, my top weight was 305 and I liked bulky food a lot better than sweets, so others are starting out with a much greater challenge than me, but:
For me, enjoying and keeping up with the exercise means constant experimentation with different programs and activity. You know I've done heavy weights, sprints, running ergonomics (Pose Running), mtn. biking, cross country skiing, Ashtanga and Bikram yoga, P90X, rope jumping, stretch cordz and other stuff just to keep it interesting and keep the body guessing what I'm going to throw at it next.
People need to find some activity that they can keep going for the first two years post op (at least) and be constantly searching for activities they think are fun.

Dave
Only a douchecannon would call you a douchebag. You're totally undouche.
The free man owns himself. He can damage himself with either eating or drinking....... If he does he is certainly a damn fool, and he might possibly be a damned soul; but if he may not, he is not a free man any more than a dog.

(that's one of my favorite bag pics!)
Hey if I had that much time I'd start a band again, then I'd have the right to get up on stage and dress douchey!
Thanks, Rockytop. Being in Japan where most guys and especially other teachers could give a rats butt about fitness and exercise, I'm a little afraid that I take bragging rights more than I should. I guess it fills the self expresion vacuum.
But a little bragging here and there keeps me going....
As do...
YOU GUYS! I couldn't do it with out you. You guys fight the good fight and win and encourage me to keep going.
Best Wishes,
Dave

Dave, I don't know about this douchebag chit - and could care less. I guess I am getting old, cause at 55 that kinda stuff is foreign to me.
What I do know is that you have accomplished a great deal and definitely have a right to be proud. While most folks are not gonna be the exercise freak you have become, you are a great example of what a person can do with proper focus, dedication and consistency.
Congrats to ya Brother!

The douchie stuff hits a familiar chord to me because I used to see frat boys dressing like that at UVa and now I see even more extreme fashion and Yahoo (not Wahoo - the UVa Team) behavior amongst boys at my U. of employment. And I've always enjoyed seeing people in "over-the-top" threads. One of my favorites is Brian Setzer ( of the Stray Cats):

Wish I could find a shot of his shoes...
...But anyway...
I appreciate the compliment.
My theory is that exercise is not really that hard to do once you've started and have a fitness base. The problem is, it becomes monotonous boring, lonely (if no one is around) and there a lot of reason to quit will arise. So you have to find exercise you enjoy, then alternatives that you enjoy.
And of course, lightness is important if people can get there. If everyone gets as light on their feet as they can, with a high strength to bodyweight ratio, then I'm sure exercise will be more enoyable and a lot easier to continue.
So fun + increased mobility seems like a good recipe for continuing.
You're really shaping up as well, aren't you?
Best Wishes,
Dave
