IDGOMB Tuesday (plus some updates from North Shore)
40 minutes walking today (Dancing class tonight)
So, an update from my 4 day weekend to the North Shore. Took good long hikes each day at different state parks. The scenic views are spectacular and I felt good with the exercise. I also stayed away from alcohol even though everyone was offering me drinks throughout the weekend. The toughest was to say no to a friend who was there from Germany who had brought some special schnapz that he wanted me to have one sip of ("for my digestion")
Otherwise, I had no temptation with the alcohol. Now on to food. I did fairly well with the food. However, I didn't track what I ate and I probably ate closer to 900 calories each day. I also am not sure that I got in all my fluid.
Well, today, I am back on track.
I will have to tell you about my defensiveness. On the first day, we were at a friends cabin (North of Lutzen on the edge of boundary waters) and there were about 40 people gathered. When they saw me they all could tell I lost some weight. One of the wives that I don't know well (who is about 75 years old) came up to me and started immediately peppering me with questions. "Wow you've lost a lot of weight, what have you been doing?" How long have you been doing it? How many pounds have you lost? How many more pounds do you think you will lose? I have a friend who had her stomach stapeled and she gained all her weight back>" etc. etc...
Anyway, during this thing I was sending her all kind of non verbal signals telling her I was uncomfortable with all her questions particularly since she was doing it in front of a bunch of people, and I had just arrived. So after she asked me, "How many pounds do you think you will lose," I said "And how many years old are you?" My friends busted out laughing but she didn't skip a beat by going on to tell me that people like me should just feel happy with the bodies we have because her friend gained back all her weight..
blah.....

At first I was defensive about WLS as well but I quickly became an advocate of WLS and, when asked, I would talk (endlessly) about the virtues of WLS and how my life had changed so much for the better. It also allowed me to intelligently discuss the misconceptions of WLS such as "the easy way out", weight regain, etc. Bottom line, you can't argue with results and we're all living proof of the effectiveness of WLS.
Not only did this tactic make me feel better but my circle of friends quickly found out not to bring it up again since they knew I would get up on my soapbox. As James Brown sang, "be loud, be proud."
Boner
ps....rode 15 miles and did my pushups and situps.
