Well, time for yet another goal of mine. Getting back into musical theater. I'm auditioning for a part in Fiddler on the Roof put on by our local theater company. I was a big (literally...) drama dude in high school, and for about a year after that until I moved out of the country. Now that life is slowing down after college, and I've got my self esteem back, it's time to hit the lights again.

Anyone know about auditions? I'm supposed to bring 32 bars, and they'll provide a reading. I'm a tenor. Not real comfortable with rock / fast-tempo stuff.

I'm thinking of doing "Breeze Off The River" from The Full Monty (no, not the shake-your-kit part) Anyone familiar with this enough to make a comment on whether or not it's a good choice for an audition?

It fits my range well, and seems to be relatively "in the moment", thus not needing a lot of background knowledge to enjoy.

Any suggestions would be great. Auditions aren't for a few weeks, and I've got an pianist ready to help me get ready. I've always been very comfortable with my voice. Even got an invitation to "America's Got Talent" last summer, but couldn't go.
up up and away, right?

Congrats on getting back the desire to get yourself back "out there"! On the audition piece...my experience on both sides of that subject as actor and as director/producer...don't sweat the "what" you pick to sing from....find a song that you can nail with ease and confidence.

The board that will audition you should be more interested in, can he hit the range in the piece selected b/c if you bring your fav. and still can't sing it well...then. Also it's about "who" you are standing up there in front of them. If you go in with the backbone of a man who has turned his entire life around and carry yourself as "the new you".....you have nothing to fear!

btw..Tevye vet many times over...Fiddler is a great show, enjoy yourself!

It's been 30 years (high school and college), but somethings remain the same. Somehow don't get nervous...it will strain your voice. Project the voice...sing out there, not 2 feet in front of you. Have alittle personallity as your sing. Not saying do a song and dance while you audition, but small hand movements and "looking out there" rather than being a mouse on stage. Those are things I remember. Brian PS Doing the reading is hard (very hard). I never quite know where to put the voice inflections.

Hey Fellows,

Pretty OT, but...

Sorry I don't know anything about theater or acting, but I do play the guitar and am trying to learn to sing well. I have Peckham's (Berklee) books and CD's and have practiced daily in the car for nearly two years. All aspects of tonal quality are improving from this, EXCEPT for range (high end) which is what I wanted the most. In place of range I have also been using Seth Riggs and Brett Manning's courses on smooth vocal register hopping and have had limited succes with getting falsetto to sounds like real vocal chord voice. But I'm still not getting the kind of quality that I want.

What I'm looking for is only about two additional high notes, which will allow me to sing most of the stuff that I'd like to sing.

Does anyone know what I might do to get two notes up?

Sorry to jump in like this!

Thanks,

Dave

Dave, maybe you can get one of your students to give you a good kick to the nads, that should get you to hit the high notes.

Hey,
Just saw this.
I'm up to my eyebrows in the Debate here.

32 bars? Pretty standard.
Have a 30 second monologue ready as well.
Something short and funny.
And something reminiscent of some of the characters you would be up for, but not an actual piece from the script incase the director has something very specific in mind...
Going by your photos, You could pull off a Fydeka or Perchik.
You look a little young for Tevye. (And too thin now!)

Make sure the "32 bars" includes your "money-note."
(The most impressive aspect, particularly range and power.)
It should show off your range and play to your voice's strength.
A couple of showy ones that are easy to get a good cut from are- (and you can find versions to peruse on youtube)

“Why God Why” (after the key change) from Miss Saigon.
also “Bui Doi” (from the same show. - the last chorus
“Wheels of a Dream” from Ragtime is easy to cut to a very impressive piece too.

A lot of will be about what sheet music you can get your hands on.
In that regard, something old is better-
“At Last” Gordon & Warren. or some Rodgers&Hart piece....

What ever you end up with, “prep” your sheet music for the accompanist.
Glue it or tape it to a file folded or card stock so it can be spread out
in one flat piece and has no chance of drooping over or slipping down
and with no page turns.
It rules out the accompanist making any mistakes.
Even if they blow it a little, it translates to you blowing it a little.
Yes?
Above everything, don’t be nervous.
The casting folk aren’t there looking for you flaws,
They are hoping you are awesome and the answer to all their needs.
No one is pulling for you harder than the person casting the show.
Hope you have a blast.

Dang, Cartman .. theatre? singing? WTF? We never knew!

... and here we though you were one of the MF's more "macho" dudes, with the fishing and all ..

Frank talk about the DS / "All I ever wanted to be was thin, like that Rolling Stones dude ... "

HW/461 LW/251 GW/189 CW/274 (yep, a DS semi-failure - it happens :-( )
