Hi All

I had a RNY back in 06. I read a lot of posts on Caffeine
is a no-no. I forget why? Can some please explain? I need a good kick in the a$$ in the morning.

I was told only the first four months is this a concern it slows the internal healing process. Rocky Top

I believe it is because it's a Diuretic. And could dehydrate us. I think it might also mess with our metabolic rate.
I have been guilty of a half cup or a cup once or twice a week though. I haven't had any adverse affects. But, I do drink lots of water all day long.

Caffeine affects in numerous ways actually. One way that is of particular concern for us WLS'ers is it's diuretic effect. Which essentially means it makes your pee your hard earned fluids out! I drink a lot of coffee, at least a 16oz cup every morning, or most mornings anyway. It's the only way I can stay awake. Another thing is it does something with your metabolism. Caffeine is a stimulant so it's an appetite suppressant which CAN help you lose weight but losing the fluids just offsets that because you need fuel AND fluids to live. Everything in moderation I guess. Tell that to my brain though.

My surgeon told me that caffein can irritate your tender new pouch and could encourage an ulcer.  He said I could work my way back into it when I'm about three months out. In the meantime, I'm kind of getting used to decaf.  I just don't want to stay used to it.

I was told it hinders or slows the healing process, and in some cases can cause irritation to the pouch.
