IIRC, I had read he has like a genius-level IQ, although he likes to "dumb it down" some in his tunes and videos .. 
I remember hearing the amazing story too back then about how how Panama came to be. Supposedly DLR or Eddie was riding in a cab in some big city (NY? LA?) and he already had the tune in his head .. He did kind of an impromptu acapella performance of it in the backseat of the cab for the driver and asked the driver earnestly what he thought of it .. The driver enthusiastically approved of the tune, so the group, on the basis of that "expert opinion", made the decision to go ahead and record it (turned out to be a big hit for them, of course) ..
