As for the beta blocker, it's just a precaution that some Doctors take for patients that have other issues and are undergoing non-emergency surgery. Beta blockers block the beta-adrenergics of the nervous system which controls many important organs like the heart and lungs. Beta blockers relieve stress on the heart by slowing the heart beat which lessens the force with which the heart muscle contracts. This in turn reduces the pressure in the blood vessels and/or increases the flow of blood. They are routinely used for treatment of hypertension, cardiac arrythmia, tachycardia, angina, and gloucoma. It is now protocol for cardiologists to prescribe beta blockers to anyone post heart attack to improve their chances of survival. I was on beta blockers for about 6 months after my heart attacks.
My guess is your Doc is just being extra cautious considering your hypertension and obesity. Sounds like he's trying to do his best to look out for your best interest to me - which is exactly what I would want!
