New, but have been lurking for a while

Hey all,

I am new, but have been lurking around waiting to jump in and say hi!  I am going in for my WLS on November 20.  Mixed emotions, I have been heavy all my life and I want the rest of my life to be better, for me and my wife and daughter.  My wife had surgery Sept 22 and lost close to 40 pounds already.  I have been reading your advise to others and appreciate that this board is available.  Thanks for all your help so far.

Howdy Roo...glad to have you step out of the shadows.  Congrats to your wife for her early success too!

What's causing your mixed emotions?  Worry over the surgical procedure itself or just if you're ready to leave this lifestyle behind?  I think most all the guys in here will vouch that we all tend to want to hold too tightly to the "normal" we know, even though we believe without a doubt that it's killing us.

Don't be afraid to post anything that's bothering you...over the years I've found that no matter who seems to be hanging around the Locker Room at the time, most of the guys are here to get, and more importantly, to give that hand up, and that "atta' boy" where needed.

Hi,

Just a response to your question above.
Yes, you actually hit the nail on the head, a few of those things are causing me mixed emotions, I don't want to die on the table, but I don't want to die of obesity either. I have a love affair with food so there is going to be a mourning period of sorts (I'm going to miss my cookies).  But I want to be healthier, my skeletal system will thank me, I see what my uncle is going through now and he is only 62 and has serious joint and knee and hip problems.  My Dad had two hip replacements and has severe Parkinsons, if that comes my way I want to be able to move as much as possible for as long as possible on my own.  So I want to be able to jog and be more active.  With every pound I have gained and I haven't been under 300 pounds for 13 years and the weight is coming on faster and faster.  I'm 377 pounds, which is actually 12 pounds less than my heaviest 389.  I can't do this anymore, i'm only 42 I have a lot to do and a lot to live for.  Sorry, I'm not ranting the emotional flood gates are open and I need to get this all out.  I'm also tired of the stigma attached to my size.  People see a fat person and they automatically say Lazy.  That is not the case, I run around and work just as hard as anyone else.  But I never crashed so hard at the end of the day before.  I am physically warn out and that is were my size is getting in the way.  I'm tired of movie seats that don't fit, Rides at amuzement parks with seats that look too small.  The overall inconvenience of being my size and it has been for my entire life.  I should actually past this to my profile, because that's my story and it has to change!

Thanks for letting me get it out

Rob.....welcome to our WLS men's locker room! Soon we will be saving you a seat on our loser's bench. Believe me.....your life will get better...much better!! Your only regret will be that you didn't have the surgery sooner. Just listen to your doc and NUT and walk, sip and chew. Good luck and keep us posted!!          John

Hi Rob Roo ..     (hmmmm  btw, did you know "roo" is an African tribal language word for "passing the monthly flow" for gals? - don't remember how I learned that

But more seriously ..   I remember some gal posted on TT earlier this week that she had WLS earlier and now her hubby was getting ready to, as well    ..  She asked us guys on there to share how WLS affected us ..  Me and some other guys enlightened her, and I think I was the one that invited her to have her hubby join us here on the MF to ask some questions too .    Is that you?

Frank talk about the DS / "All I ever wanted to be was thin, like that Rolling Stones dude ... "

Hi Batwing - No that isn't me, my DW doesn't post yet, she is shy.  In fact, I haven't told her I registered yet.  But thanks to all for the support!

Thanks for the post Rob and best of luck on the 20th. Great timing for your WLS since you will avoid the trappings of the holiday eating pigfests. Best of luck to both you and your wife in your WLS journeys!

It's cool you can share the WLS experience together......a built-in exercise and nutritional eating team so to speak.

Welcome Bob!  Congrats on your decision to have WLS and glad to see you pop outta the shadows.  Glad your wife was able to also take part in the journey.

I am now 10 days post op and doin great and feeling pretty good.  I had all kinds of butterflies and emotions in the whole range before surgery.  It was a roller coaster ride of excitement and fear.  No worries friend all will be well.  I am recovering quickly and now back at work for 2 days and losing weight like crazy!  Best decision I have made in my life next to starting a family - which I will now be able to enjoy more and for longer!
