I am a 56 yr old male newbie with my first orientation meeting in Roseville, Ca Mon 12/15/08. So far, that is all my insurance has approved, but hopefully they will approve my surgury after I "jump thru all the hoops" that are necessary. I am over 100lbs overweight with a bmi well over 40. I have done a lot of research online and have been lurking on some forums (including this one). I would like to have a lap band if possible, but I need to wait and see what the doc and staff have to say. I notice how a lot of you guys use "farts" in your topics and descriptions. I'm not sure how you do this on the blog, but it is something I am very good at in real life!!  (farting, that is) Anyway, I look forward to reading and participating on this forum. Any advice or words of wisdom would be appreciated.

Howdy Treedude   and welcome ..      (errr ... your name wouldn't happen to be "Johnny Appleseed" would it?     )

The F.A.R.T. thing is (usually) an acronym, for "fantastic,  awesome, really terrific" (I think  )      It means we have accomplished something really great (to us) b/c of our weight loss ..

So put on your gas mask and join the fun .. !

Frank talk about the DS / "All I ever wanted to be was thin, like that Rolling Stones dude ... "

Welcome aboard. Sounds like you have done some research. Dig in and keep at it. There is a lot to learn.

Yes, there are MANY hoops. But it is worth the jump to have your life back and enjoying so many things you never thought you could do again. Hell it is a FART to just be able to tie your shoes without being out holding your breath!

I was 55 when I had my surgery last year.  My only regret is that I waited so long.  Even with certain complications, I would do it again in a NY minute.  Read everything you can, ask as many questions as you can and be as prepared as you can be.  When you decide on the type of surgery, it will feel right.  A lot of people on these boards are VERY passionate about one type of surgery over another.  That is a good thing, but you have to decide what is right for you and your family.  If you work the tool you will be getting, you can be successful with any of the surgeries.
Good luck and ask away.  There will always be a spot on the losers bench for you!
