Multi-Vitamins with Iron -- do they bother you???

Hello, I'm 8 days short of being one year out of surgery, and I'm down 180 lbs with another 70 to go.  Obviously, I'm very happy about that.

For the first few months out of surgery, I had a lot of problems taking vitamins, they made my stomach upset all of the time, so I laid off them.

Then, because iron was supossed to be the hardest on the GI tract, I got a bottle of regular mutli-vitamins without iron, and I tolerated these pretty well withut any problems.

Well, I switched recently to a multi-vitamin with iron, because it was somewhat low, not severely or anything, by trying to get iron just from my diet.

The first couple of days, I did get a somewhat upset stomach, which didn't surprise me, since I know iron supplements are hard on the stomach.

Since then, it doesn't make me sick or anything, but every day after I take it, saliva starts flowing like the Niagra Falls in my mouth, all day, constantly.  This "mouth watering" side effect is annoying.  Not making me sick or anything, just annoying, really, really annoying.

Has anyone else had this sort of problem with iron supplements?  It HAS to be the iron, because that is the ONLY change I've made -- in fact, I even bought the same brand of vitamins, just the iron enriched formula.  No changes in diet, meds, anything like that.

I didn't have that problem with IRON.  However, my surgeon asked me to stop taking iron because he didn't think I needed it unless my iron counts came back bad.  My iron was actually a little elevated do to taking the iron.  Does your surgeon recommend iron? Some do, some don't.  Sounds like you could try a different batch and see if it still happens, or eliminate the iron and see if the problem continues.  If it does, maybe it is something else.  Hope it goes away soon!!!

Have you tried taking them after food? I used to get upset stomach if I did them before eating. like in the morning.

Never heard of the "watering hole" problem, but iron is bad on the stomach, depending on the formulation ..   Therei s ferrous sulfate, cabonyl iron, and a few others out there .

I've found the best-tolerated iron for many WLSers on OH seems to be that "Tender Iron" that Vita-lady sells online ..   They are small chewables with a sort of "neutral" flavor ..  250 mgs. of carbonyl iron in each (which is supposedly one of the best-absorbed forms) ..  They have some calcium in them to ease the effect on the digestive tract, but fear not, as the form of calcium in them does NOT inhibit absorption of the iron like most calcium does ..  I chew 6 in the a.m. and another 6 at night, as I am battling the "anemia demon" too these days .

Frank talk about the DS / "All I ever wanted to be was thin, like that Rolling Stones dude ... "

The iron in your multi wouldn't be enough to bring up your iron levels, same goes with your food intake. When you had the RNY, you didn't only restrict the amount of food you can eat, but you also "messed" with how your body processes food. You've taken out some of your bodies natural ability to process and absorb vitamins form food, this is the reason RNYers (VSGers and DSers) need to have regular blood work to make sure they are on target with their suppliment regimes.

My advice, dump the multis + iron if they are upsetting your stomach. The amount of iron in a multi is nothing, and is compromised by the calcium in it (calcium and iron cancel eachother out because they compete for absorbtion). The best way to take iron is on an empty stomach with Vit. C, and not to eat protein, whole grains, dairy products etc (some fruit is ok) for at least 1 hour after it.

My advice is to try th tender iron from vitalady, it seems to work for a lot of post ops, you need to take at least 6 to get 150 mg of elemental iron.
