Newbie takin' the leap
Hello guys! I say I am a newbie takin' the leap because I have been watching this forum as an "outsider" for a couple of weeks now. "Takin' the leap" for me means actually joining in and participating and asking you guys to help hold me accountable to my own goals. I had RNY on January 7, 2009 and since my H&P on 12/30/08, I have lost over 30# so far. My surgeon required a week-long liquid diet prior to surgery (mine started on New Year's Eve
) but it wasn't really all that bad. I lost 21# that week and was shocked to discover that surgery and 2 days in the hospital resulted in gaining 15# back! But, I quickly lost that and am now losing at about a pound a day.
Right now, it's not too hard at all because I don't have too much appetite, but I will be going back to work starting today and my fear is for the future. I have done well on diets in the past for a few weeks and then lost all motivation. Obviously, this is going to have to be different. That's why I'm taking this step now to get involved in this forum and make this a part of my life. So, I hope you all have the patience and fortitude to deal with one more rookie.

Learn to eat properly following your surgery. As you begin to eventually eat more food, it will be necessary to continue following a good eating plan. Consult the team at your bariatric surgeon's office if you have any questions about allowable foods. I say this only because various doctors have different food plans based on individual needs and differences in WLS surgeries. Learning to eat properly now will ensure long term success.
Welcome to the forum and glad to hear that you have had your surgery and you are already seeing the results of using the tool the surgeon gave you. As others have said, stick to your plan laid out by your doctor. When allowed by your doctor, start exercising regularly and you will be amazed at how much weight will actually come off. Good luck with everything. You have a great outreach program here on the mens forum. There are many great individuals with lots of testimonials, advice, and experience. Those people are here to lean on when needed. For many of us, this forum is what really helped us to get through tough and trying times, at least that was the case for me anyway.

As others have said, use these first months to learn some new, good habits. Focus on the long-term goals of good health and fitter body and try not to get hung up on the daily, or even weekly, fluctuations of the scale.
Take some pictures of yourself now and keep taking them every other week or at least once a month. Sometimes your mind doesn't pick up on the changes but looking through different pictures of yourself along the way will shock you a few months from now.
Good luck on your journey and welcome to the men's forum.

Hey Merlin,
Glad you took the leap. It is a wild ride and company helps.
I know what you mean about the past and being able to stick to a diet but only for a while. Then all hell breaks loose. I have used the guys here to help give me that kick in the ass to get me moving again. Get focused on 'good for me' food and on exercise.
I want to also recommend taking your measurements. Neck, waist hips, upper arm, lower arm, thigh and calf. I have been grateful for doing that on top of the pictures. There will be days or weeks when you do not loose and you feel discourage and even think it might not be working any more. Then I finally remember to take my measurements and sure enough there goes an other several inches all over my body. It really feels great to see those numbers progress.
Stick to your exercises because it is a B*tch to get back into it. Not that I know anything about that....
