OT: It looks like our cat will be alright

We have an asthmatic cat.  We didn't know this until last summer when we had to take her to the emergency vet after regular vets' office hours.  They held her overnight then and gave her an X-ray and monitored an IV all night.  The bill came to a little over $1,000 but we paid because she is my wife's "baby."  However, I gold my wife we really can't afford to be paying money like that for treating a cat.  We got her 3 years ago from a shelter when she was already 6.

Well, we had to take her to the vet on Wed night again.  I just saw $$$ spinning in front of my eyes.  I told the vet what we spent this past summer and said we simply can't afford that now.  I'm retired and my wife is unemployed.  The cat was given another X-ray and put in an oxygen tent for 3 hours.  That bill only came to $300.  I told my wife again that we simply can't afford to get these treatments every few months for a shelter cat for whom we only paid $50.  If this keeps up, I want to put this cat to sleep and get another one.  My wife says she couldn't go through the death of another pet.  Geez!!  Cats and dogs only live to be 15-20 if you're lucky.  So,  getting more than one during a lifetime seems reasonable.  This is the 2nd cat we've had.  We went about 15 years after the death of our first cat befor we got this one.

By the way, I do love our little Sweetheart.  I love to  have her come and sit on my chest when I'm reclining and watching TV.  I don't like how she's always sticking her butt in my face as she gets ready to lie down, but I've seen other people go through similar behavior with their cats.  And, our cat is extremely friendly and purrs a lot.  Oh, we're really suckers for hearing her purr.  I love her, but I don' Love her like my wife does.  And, I'm the one who picked her out.

Anyway, she's better and my wife's mood is better.  Things are much better in Sweetheart's world.  I say this because I'm just a boarder in Sweetheart's house.  Bob

Well, I'd say hang in there ..  maybe Pres. Obama will put in place an affordable plan for pet health insurance for everyone soon ..

I really don't know how to take your comments.  I suppose you are being facetious.  If you are mocking or criticizing Pres. Obama's plans for universal health care for people, then I couldn't disagree with you more.

I've worked my entire career post college until retirement with people who either had Medicaid, Medicare, or both.  I've also come accross many people who had medical needs and didn't have health insurance nor did they qualify for these programs.  I immediately think of a friend who owned a dry cleaning business and had to go sell his business in order to pay for his medical bills.  My heart aches for the working poor who do not qualify for any health ins.  The truly poor usually can get Medicaid

Even though I have an excellent HMO through the Fed govt, I'm sometimes tempted to not get prescriptions filled because of the cost even with the ins.  This is especially hard now with my wife being unemployed.  But, I'm too scared not to take my meds.  I'm afraid I might have to be hospitalized against my will if I didn't take my meds.  Many people have life threatening illnesses and do have to choose between meds and food.

A problem we have here in NJ is the preponderence of people in our cities who don't have primary physicians and immediately go to hospital emergency rooms when they get sick.  This is the least efficient way to use an expensive medical asset.  By law, the hospitals can't refuse them care.  So, we have hospitals all over NJ filing for bankruptcy.

Yeah, I know that I may be jumbling many different problems.  I do know this will be expensive and will result in tax increases.  I suggest people watch Roger Moore's film, Sicko , to see how the USA compares to other countries regarding health ins.  Our drug companies charge us more for the same prescriptions than they do in other countries because they can get away with it.  It's time to redistribute the wealth in this country.  It's little wonder that many multimillionaires want to be USA citizens to qualify for our taxes that are less harsh on the rich than many other countries.  Do people really think that all of those British rock stars really want to be our citizens because they are so enamored of our government?

I'm no Commie.  I'm not even a socialist.  I'm just disgusted about how Bush raped the middle class and redistributed money to the rich.  We just want our money and benefits back.  Bob

I couldn't agree with you more, Bobber ..   I really hope Pres. O.'s plan will work, as we are way overdue for healthcare for all in our country (in fact, I think we're the only major Western nation that doesn't have such a program) ..

Frankly, I was stunned when Bush put through coverage for medications under Medicare ..   I had always just assumed that Medicare covered medications --  otherwise it would be like providing free auto mechanic repair services, but not providing the needed parts ..   No wonder people on S.S. were having to make such "hard choices" . .  I wonder how many people would still be alive today if only they had been able to take all their needed medications, if their meds had been covered by S.S. before now ..

Heck, I remember how even the old U.S.S.R. bragged about having medical care available there for all their citizens (and I heard that when a patient went to see a doc there, they were seen not by just 1o r 2 docs, but 3!)      How can we do no less for our people?
