Exercise Post-Op

Gentlemen,
I'm new to OH and have a surgery date scheduled for April 22nd.  I'll be having a RNY.  I have a few questions for you.  I would like to know how long it was post-op before you started exercising.  How long did you wait to start cardio?  How long did you wait to start weight resistance?  How long did it take for you to get the energy back to exercise?

I try to exercise as much as I can.  I was a jock in school and have continued to exercise ever since (although not always consistently) over the past 26 years.  I like to exercise.  I will miss exercising while I'm recuperating from the surgery.  I just don't want to be over jealous and push myself too hard in the beginning.  The last thing that I want to do is give myself a hernia and end up back in surgery.  I greatly appreciate any feedback or input that you can give me.
Thanks,
Duane

Welcome aboard! You will start walking immediately after surgery. The saying is "walk, walk, walk - sip sip sip". You will be able to increase the walking almost every day. As far as weight training, it will be a couple of months before you can start. Your energy will come and go for a while, and it usually takes about 6 to 8 weeks to get your strength and stamina back up to narmal.  Just don't overdo it. Be sure to talk to your Doc about this! Good luck to ya!

I had RYS and the doc said walk, walk, sip, sip. Dont go to the gym until 3-4 mos out.  I did and paid a price for it. Just got bored.  MAJOR surgery needs time. The intestine is reconfigured and will take 10-13 mos to re-adapt.  Doc said the system was not ready to compensate for the stress.  Pain throughout the stomach area, slow down on weight loss.  In fact Doc said I may gain 12 lbs back if I keep it up.
Now back in gym 4 mos out, weight machines, treads, motion etc.  NO PUMPING, shaping,, just EXERCISING. Trying to burn 800 cals 5 days week - regular exercise, good diet and lotsa fluids
Good luck and welcome to a great journey

Initially they said do anything that involved walking and cardio, but wait 6 weeks before any type of exercise that put stress on the abdominal section of your body.  About 4 weeks into it, the doc said if I could do light weights on a machine as long as it was an isolated exercise that did not involve the abs.  And that by 6 weeks I could do whatever I wanted, but to start out slow.

Thanks for your advice and help guys.  I know it's probably premature to think about those things but I'm the kind of person that tries to get all of the facts and details lined out before something happens.  I guess based on the instructions from my surgeon I'll set my sights to get back into weightlifting somewhere in the early fall.  From what I've read,  I doubt that I'll have the energy to do much of anything for the first month or so anyway.  By the way, I admire the success and achievements you guys have made with your weight loss.  Congratulations!
