Hey Guys,

Hadn't dropped in for a while but just wanted to drop in and let everyone know that you can still "fart" even after almost 13 months!  I went camping with my 7 year old son and his cub scout pack this weekend.  Me, who is (was) more ANTI-camping than anyone on earth.  I hadn't camped since I was a cubscout myself...for a reason.

Well, we had a BLAST!  I could have never participated as much as I did just a year ago.  I cleared that campsite, put up the tent, prepared meals, particiapated in activities (many that involved standing, hiking, etc for LONG peiords of time) and just all around had a great time with no feeling tired, sick, or sore.  What a great weekend!

P.S.  Oh yeah, one more thing...I FIVE FRICKIN' POUNDS BELOW GOAL!!!  Woo-HOO!!!

Thanks ya'll

Thats the best  bonding ever.  Taking my grandson camping to outer banks this summer.  Been through cubs, boy scouts and all, but nothing like a one on one.  Cherish these moments and tke the pics.
Good luck

Your son will never forget how much fun it was. I remember taking my younger cousins hunting 30 years ago and every time we see each other they bring it up. My own son never cared for camping, but he always talks about the trips we took together. This year he shocked me by asking to join me turkey hunting and camping in the spring. Its the simplicity of the time together that makes it so much fun. I still remember my camping trips with my dad, uncles, and cousins.

Although many of my camping trips are hunting or fishing trips I have a default weekend camping menu. Here it is:

Friday          (Arrival meal pre prepared)
Dinner          Chili
Snack           Taco chops and salsa

Saturday
Breakfast      Pancake and syrup,
                       Bacon or sausage
                       Toast
                       Cut fruit
                       Coffee. milk(from powder),
                       Juice(from powder)

Lunch            Cold cut sandwiches and chips
(Hot dogs if there are kids), drink mix,
                       Coffee, milk

Snacks          Chips, cut carrots or other veggies,
                       Cookies  (for kids)

Dinner            Either a stew with vegetables
                                       or
                        Grilled steaks / fish
                        Camp fire baked potato
                        Vegetable
                        Corn bread
                        Coffee, drink mix, milk

Sunday
Breakfast        Egg omelets
(with leftover sandwich meat and veggies)
                         Bacon or sausage
                         Cut fruit
                         Coffee, milk, juice

Lunch              Hamburgers and chips
                         Coffee, milk, drink mix

Snacks            (Any left overs are free game now.)

Dinner             (If there is one before you go home)
                         Grilled Chicken
                         Grilled vegetables
                         Rice
                         Rolls or bread
                         Coffee, milk, drink mix

This is just a basic format I follow. What's on sale and looks good at the store play into factor as well. For drink mixes and juices I find crystal lite, cool ade, and gator aide work well. I use powdered milk and coffee creamer to limit the things I have to keep in coolers. I also use canned veggies for the stew including canned potatoes and onions. Canned meats can be used as well. I have but don't usually used powdered eggs. As a last resort or very remote camping/ back packing I will use MREs. I always have a case of them in my camp for emergency provisions. (My hunting ranch is remote enough to get weathered in for days)

Hope that this helps

We kept it pretty simple on the meals, we had cold cut sandwhiches, hot dogs, muffins and oatmeal in the mornings and nuts/granola bars for snacks.  Plus lots of bottled water and juice boxes him.

Next time we go, I'd like to do something a little bit more elaborate.  I really was anticipating NOT enjoying myself, so I didn't put much thought into food.  I will next time :).

Good luck to you!

That is great Jason.  I look forward to camping every year.  It has been a horrible chore for awhile with my weight and health.  This year I expect to enjoy it more.  First campout in 2 weeks with all 5 of my boys and then in 3 weeks I am going with the oldest 2  and their troop for a Boy Scout Camporee.  I have loved camping since my childhood and the fondest memories of being with  my father are when we camped.  We used to go out in the the woods and walk a distance away from each other and then try and track each other down (my father, brother, and I).

For meals I like cooking with a Dutch Oven - no end to the number of things you can throw inside a Dutch Oven.  you can really eat well out in nature without a lot of effort.
