11 days from RNY surgery

I am 11 days from surgery, I'm on a liquid diet and it is f***ing killing me. The worst is in the evening when I'm alone at home (Wife works evenings). I'm trying to keep busy to keep my mind off my craving food.

Is it normal to have second thoughts about the surgery? I am. I know I won't back out but I keep thinking "Why am I doing this". Then I look in a mirror!!!!

We all have 2nd thoughts.  Be strong, there is a new life out there just waiting for you.  If you have read our posts you can tell we are all happy with our decision and we are all doing things we couldn't even dream of a short time ago.

I had second thoughts all the way into the pre-surgery prep room until the drugs started to flow.  Even waking up afterwards, I thought "what the hell have I done!".  Now, 8 months out, my only regret is not doing it sooner.  I'm not saying that surgery is right for everyone but it was definitely right for me.  Keep the faith through the liquid diet, (try turning off the TV and going for walks) and it will be time before you know it.

Second thoughts? You bet we all had second thoughts, who wouldn't? Its a big change, and change is scary! But after a year out I can tell you that is was so worth it all!!! Hang in there. You won't regret it.  The pre-op time through the first month post-op were the toughest for me. But now my life is the best it has ever been.

Absolutely normal to have second thoughts.
For me the excitment of finally getting the chance to be rid of the body I hated and the health concerns that were in my future were much more appealing to me than the fear and uncertainty of the surgery.

I really didn't have any fear until they started the I.V. on surgery day.  At that point I thought what about my son, what happens if something happens to me etc.  Well you know what if something happened then at least I was trying.

I had more doubts and concerns after the surgery than I did before.  It's no lie food was my friend, and I actually had and still at times do still have almost a mourning period for food.  I miss it, it was my comfort zone.  I won't trade what I did for the old life style I had, but not everything is roses on the weight loss surgery road.  You just have to compare what you have with what you had and hopefully realize you made a good decision for yourself.

Best wishes.

Scott

Yes, I had second thoughts, even told my wife "If I am not happy afterwards, it is your fault".  If only you could take words back.  Yes, I cried on the way into the OR. I know that sounds, so gay. Then I had the surgery/ my life has begun again.  Be strong and you will be happy too.  You will not believe how great you will feel when the weight comes off.

First the liquid diet,, you'll get through it.. Its hard,,, but we've all done it. I found the first two days the be the hardest and then it just got used to it. Remember PROTEIN is your friend.... Shakes and powders all helpful.

Yes, I think it is normal to have doubts and question your reasoning. I guess its not to late to pull out.. I am sure others have at this point.. I almost changed my mind the day I got insr approval... That lasted for a few hour.. But, then,,, I thought of the reasons I shouldn't have surgery and then thought of the reasons why I NEEDED to have surgery and the NEEDS won out so I never questioned it from that point on. A little fear is good in my opinion.. I mean you're about to put yourself through MAJOR surgery. Is the out come worth it.. I think YES..
Good Luck, with everything..

Thanks for all the replies. I appreciate the comments. And yes when I think about the pro's and con's of having surgery the pro's come out ahead.

Due to my weight, it was scarier for me not to have WLS so I didn't have second thoughts about it.  I thought there was a good chance that I was not going to survive the surgery.  Luckily i made it through both the original RNY and a revision 4.5 years later ( due to staple line disruption).
