my dad had 3 heart attacks by 53 and triple bypass surgery

his brother died at 53 from diabetes and obesity related causes,

the decision to have WLS is an individual one.  since most people don't/won't understand, i think its pointless trying to explain it to them.

I had similar conversations with several friends and it sucks. You expect support and get **** instead. I had one friend tell me I was not anywhere near big enough and I asked how is 325 lbs not big enough, he said your stuipd if you wieght that much. We really dont talk anymore.

Keep supportive folks around you, and the others at arms lenght and you will be better off.

I had people in my life react like that about the surgery. Some would tell about those that failed or even about someone who died. My thoughts were; what is there about that I Will Die if I do nothing is hard to understand? Ultimately you have to decide to do what is beat for you. You said it all when you said to her, "my doctor says". The decision to have WLS is between you and your doctors. Everyone else should not and do not have a say, nor are the qualified to. BLA BLA BLA BLA..  Its either for you or its not.... You know people who were totally against surgery before I had it are changing their minds now that they see me after.
Fact is that I suppose I could have gone the traditional route. I really did fine with the 6 mo sprv diet, I actually lost a lot of my weight on that. But, the prospect of keeping it off was the problem.
Surgery was the BEST option for me NOW.. But, honestly at first I wasnt sure that I wanted to admit to myself that was my only option.  It took me almost 3 years to convince myself that surgery was an acceptable option for me. There are a lot of people out there that go through that.

I think you are making the best move you could by having surgery, don't spend too much time trying to change other people's minds.  Your health and peace of mind is way too important, and once you are on the way, you'll never want to look back.  Are there risks? Sure, and its a heckuva lot riskier to stay obese..  Are there rewards? You bet, and that's what you are after.

Thre are so many people who are just set against WLS.  They seem to think it is a cop out to have WLS.  Personally I think they protest too much and are just too scared to do it themselves.

You are the only one who truely needs to feel that this is right.  It is that much better when friends and family are supportive.  I had one woman who would wail "I don't want you to have surgery!" every time I walked in the room, she was a co-worker and not even one who's opinion I respect about the weather, let alone choices that would effect my life!  She would also like to share horror stories about a friend of a friend who had complications (why is it WLS and Vasectomys that people always feel like they have to tell the horror stories?).  Well I decided to bring in a cake to celebrate my 1 year Surgiversary yesterday (If I make them gain weight I will look thinner!  ) as a way of thanking people for all the support I have been given over the past year.  She was the person who took the biggest slice and she is diabetic, so the cake is just as bad, if not worse for her as it is for me.  It is funny I really don't miss things like this cake.

If you need support or just someone to talk to, you have found the right place.  All the guys here understand what it is like to be overweight, want surgery and start a new life.  You can just post here in the lockerroom or send a private message to someone.  The changes in your life will require you to have a support system.  Just ignore this woman!
