I'm a 28 yrs. old man who is thinking of having the VSG. I was wondering what type of experences other men, my age or close, has had with the proceeder. Like....How much weight?Time frame? I realize that surgery is just a tool and it will take me being motovated and stick to my diet, but I was just curious how others faired. Currently I weigh apprpx. 360 lbs., I stand 6'3" so I "carry it well" (if thats possible). Thanks for any feed back.

I am having vsg in a few weeks. From my reading I should be able to drop 100lbs in 5 months. With my pre-op liquid diet I am down 25lbs in 16 days.  I am at 410 now.  Yes being tall helps you carry it well.  I am 6'3 and people tell me i am not big enough to have wls. haha

What's up Puma! I'm 34 started at about 430-ish. Made my appointment went down to 421 and had my surgery on December 6th 2008. It's tough to get used to, but the benifits, as other will attest, are un-effing-believable! I'm now weighing in at 316. I'm kind of stalled at the moment and even think I gained 2 lb's this past week, but I have not been exorsising much at all. I need to get back at it to get down to my goal of 250lbs.

After you get through the first month and a half after sugery and re-learn how and what to eat it gets rather easier. It shouldn't effect your work at all (it didn't mine anyway). After a couple months work will probably actually get easier for you. More stamina and hell, more respect! Just make sure you stay away from them donuts! (noticed from your previous post you're a detective=P).

If you got any questions or concerns feel free to message me and I'll try to answer you back as best I can.

VSG on 12/10/07 with
Puma

I started out on 12-10-2007 at a weight of 408 amd I'm only 5'9" tall . It was a few weeks before my 42 birthday .  3 1/2 months later I was down 80 pounds and right now I'm at 211 which is a total loss of 197 pounds .  Still dropping a pound here or there and hope to drop a little more before  this fall when I plan on having P/S !

All I can tell you this was the best thing I ever did for myself and if I could change any of it  -- it would to have had it at an earlier age .  But I would not changed anything else !!

Good luck

The rate of weight loss with V.S.G. (and total amount lost, as well as KEPT off) will be less than with the DS, which is the procedure I would highly recommend with as much weight as you have to lose (I estimate to be at least 160 lbs.?).

I lost 210 lbs. in about 10 months or so with my DS.    You would probably lose 150 lbs., given your young age, within 6-8 months of the DS.  With a V.S.G. I bet it will take a year or even closer to 18 months to lose that much.

If you do want to look into the DS, Dr. Warden in the Covington, LA area does the DS and has for many years now, although I do NOT recommend him to perform the actual surgery.   Many of his DS patients have reported problems with their surgery in the past, including my very own DS angel.      Dr. Dennis Smith in Atlanta would be a good choice, as he has had many happy campers over the years.  Dr. Husted, in southern KY, is also a pioneer in the DS surgery field, and not too far away from you.  Also, Dr. Daryl Stewart here in Texas (Denton) has been doing the DS for over 1 1/2 years now and has had great results with his patients.  He is also one of the lowest cash-pay priced DS surgeons in the U.S. right now, both for open and lap.

Good luck on whatever you decide to do.

I had a RNY just one year ago.  I am 6' 4" and 362, so we probably would appear very similar.  I can't speak for the VSG, but I have lost 160 pounds in 1 year with my RNY.  I would guess that 3/4 of that 160 pounds came off in the first six month and I have been relatively stable since about 8 months post op.  I would guess that a VSG should give similar results.  It is important that you pick the surgery that is the best fit for you, this is a life long commitment (hopefully it will be a very long commitment).  Only you can make the decision as to which is the best option for you.

I personally know that I could gain back all that weight and more if I allow myself to graze.  I have to stick to my 3 meals a day, protein first, low carb & Fat, get in my fluids.  Exercise has become a regular part of my life (I go Monday to Friday before work).

Good luck with your VSG.  If you have any other questions or any way we can offer support, please make sure to post them
