Fell off the Wagon
I need help guys. Just passed by 2 yr anniversary and the weight is coming back. I know 99% is me, I'm not doing what I'm supposed to and I'm eating what I shouldn't. Will someone please give me a smack upside the head! All the things I did before, not exercising, heavy on the carbs, etc. Unfortunately I'm one of those people that can eat anything with not dumping problems. While I'm still down around 200 (from 291) my goal is 185. I made it the first 6 months, but seems like the last 6 months or so I've started climbing. At 54 and 5'10 I'm not really sure how many calories I should be eating. I've also stopped the the vitamins and the protein supplements.
Don
knock it the hell off. You know what you are supposed to be doing. You will lose this gamble. Get back on the program. You can do it. Drink your fluids, take your vitamins, calcium, excercise a little each day, focus on protein, go to livestrong and count calories for a while. Do you have a NUT. They can help you determine how many calories your burn in a day without doing anything. Get some counseling. Don't let this happen. GOod start admitting it. None of us is perfect.
You took the first and second step. 1) you admit you have a problem. 2) You told someone else and asked for help. Next you have to actually do something.
Start a food and exercise diary today right after you make an appointment with your NUT. Having to write it down will be a discouragement from eating it. Are you eating 3 or 6 meals per day? We need to eat a little - often to keep our metabolism working efficiently. Exercise is next. Not to many people enjoy a workout, but I found that I get plenty of exercise doing the things I love. What was the thing Fat Don couldn't do but wished he could? Thon Don can do it so if you didn't start already do it now. At 54 you are not dead yet.
Good luck, and keep us posted.

The guys who come here regularly know that I never had a clean program until this January. I managed to lose over 200 lbs due to the RNY but I'm a compulsive eater, a sugar and white carb addict, and a junk food junkie. I've tried everything to overcome my addictions without success. I posted on the Main Forum in Jan asking if anyone knew of a book that could help change my behavior.
A woman who is a food addict in remission as well as a behavioral therapist suggested that I get a copy of the Beck's Diet Solution. She said that she uses it with food addicts in both individual and group therapy sessions. This is a book of techniques to teach you how to follow any nutritious diet and to maintain your weight once you have reached your goal.
I boought the book and began working the written exercises. I have been in remission since 01-29-09, that is, I haven't had my addictive foods since then. I had what I thought was a slice of dark bread on Mother's Day but it tasted like cake. Luckily it didn't mess me up. I just went back to the book and did the appropriate written exercise and was back on the program immediately.
Beck's comes in both a hardcover and workbook. You only need one of them and I recommend the workbook for post-ops. It's a 6 wk course and it has totally transformed my life. The primary technique used in the book is cognitve therapy: you formulate helpful responses to sabotaging thoughts. For example, if you think that you've slipped and all is doom, you recognize that, and write down a response such as " I know I've slipped now, but I don't slip all of the time. I can pick myself back up and follow my diet." The 6 week course is spread out over 42 "Days" of exercises ( 6 wks X 7 days per week =42 Days). Since this is a course that you are going to follow for the rest of your life, it doesn't really matter if you are actually able to do an exercise per calendar day or if it takes you a couple days to do one exercise.
Initially, Dr Beck says not to start to diet until the 15th day of the program. But, I say that we have been dieting at least since we had our WLS. I say to continue on that Diet but do not put yourself down nor assign any guilt until day 15. Do the days of the program in succession as they are written.
No, I won't kick you in the butt to get you back on a solid program. I extend my hand to you. If you need any help once you get the book, just contact me. I'm no expert, I'm just a little further along with this program than you are. Bob

Scott, I didn't realize that you only needed either the hardcover or the workbook, so I got them bundled together with CDs. I listened to the first CD once and feel they're a waste of money. After working with the books, I feel that the hardcover is more appropriate for pre-ops while the workbook would probably be better for post-ops if someone cannot afford both. Even the author herself says you only need one of the two ( I bet her publisher doesn't like that remark). the difference between the 2 books is in the details. The hardcover is more detailed and has more theory. I think most post-ops already know most of those details and really don't need it hammered into them. Most of them have had some nutrion counseling either pre-op and/or post-op.
The book works with any nutritional diet. Therefor, I feel that most post-ops should just continue with the post-op diet they were give by their surgeon. I changed my food plan in Jan when I stopped eating all white flour, sugar, and junk food--it wasn't a major change. If your wife is not following a nutritious diet, have her get one that is approved by her doctor--to take into account any medical conditions she may have. She should follow Dr Beck's instructions of following the program for the first 14 days without dieting. You can diet from Day 1 but do not blame yourself for any eating mistakes.
Whichever book you use, I suggest using spiral bound notebooks for writing down the exercises. I use the same notebooks for my daily food logs. Take the Days or steps in succession. You may find that you really don't need all of them. For example, I didn't have to schedule time for diet or exercise since I have been retired on disability since July 1992. Scheduling time for working the program may be difficult for some people but it is important.
Don't worry if you and your wife are soon on different "Days" of the program. The program quickly becomes personal based on how you answer the questions. You may have to spend a few calendar days on one of the questions. So What? You will use the techniques in the book for the rest of your life. I've found that I can go back and quickly refer to a problem and it's resolution after having done that part of the program. But, don't skip ahead because one Day's lessons work off previous Days' info.
